For the record, none of the bands listed in this thread are truly ska bands. The term has evolved to include any regular rock/punk gigs that include brass instruments in their lineup, which I think is a damn shame.

However, in response to the OP, I think Sublime is the way to go, if you can pull it off. But please, do not intentionally sing out of tune, that is one thing that really grinds my gears.

How are the Specials, the Selecter, and the English Beat not "truly ska bands"? Who is, if not the Specials?

Wow...you're hip fro 1995 :)

I hate Ska. Not because of the music, but because of it's name. It sounds like they were going to name it something, but couldn't come up with the second part of the word

No Buck-O-Nine fans? I absolutley love that band.

Meh. As I said, I think pretty much all of the American ska bands blow. Buck-O-Nine are mediocre - they're not AS bad as, say, the Bosstones, but their music is still fundamentally soulless IMO. There's probably no way a band made up of American kids can play credible ska, but I seriously think you need to look to REAL ska for inspiration, not to crap like Buck-O-Nine. It's as though you wanted to start a career as a solo soul singer, but instead of looking to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding for inspiration, you based your style on Michael Bolton and Barry Manilow.
