Gonna be picking up my friend's copy of Diablo 2 + expansion either tomorrow or sunday. I've played through D1 before, but never really got into it, so I skipped the second installment. However, with all the hype, I figured I'll at least give it a try.

I've looked through a few D2 info sites and haven't really been able to make heads or tails of the info (runewords? chaotic skills organization, etc)

anyone know any good guides for it? I'll like to have some idea of how to build an effective character before i jump into it.

Just load it up and enjoy the game. Don't start that min/maxing bullshit unless all you want to do is jump online and grief people. Not a hard game, so pic a class that interests you and chose some skill to complement it. Not that difficult.

I wouldn't worry too much about finding the "right" build the first time through. Just go with whatever sounds cool for the first character, have fun and learn alot, then later make a new one when you have a better idea of what to do. You could just play the first character briefly, through like level 30-40 maybe.

thanks. I don't know if I want to make an amazon or a paladin at this point.

I'm probably just gonna play through the single player for now. If i end up liking it, i might hop on Bnet and see how bad hacking is with this installment =P

Big mistake.

You might as well start on battlenet. You can make private games that only you can play on, so it's the same as playing single player. However, if you ever feel like playing with others, you can always join a multiple player game. There are no real benefits that single player provides over battlenet.

I went cold turkey about three months ago (before the 350k accounts were banned... that all of mine probably would have been subject to if I was actually still playing lol). Baby on the way, which does not compute with D2.

IIRC, you can hold hte button down, and you will attack until you kill, or are killed. Granted still a ton of clicking, but not as bad as D1.

Definitely play online. Why?

Get your gear, magic find, trade (make tons of profit, find those awesome deals, rip off newbs) make a pvp char and woop everybody's ass ;]

Classes I recommend:
1) sorc for mfing
2) hammerdain for improved mfing
3) bowazon (pvp)
4) javazon (pve and pvp)
5) barb (PVP)
6) ele druid (PVP)
7) zealer (IMO the strongest PVP build and most expensive)

Greatest game to ever come out--kept me playing for about 6 years on and off. Restarted 3 times and all three I managed to do some crazy deals and finds. (ie: 199% eth Hoz )
Neverfound a wf though, and it was my dream.

Exactly what I did with Blizzard's other creation - WoW. It's fun to have a level 17 toon with like 2k in gold built up in a couple of weeks from just messing around.

Out of curiosity, as someone with a bunch of Level 80+ characters who never played the economy, exactly how do you 'play the economy' in D2? I got to the point where farming stuff for my characters wasn't very fun. Just boring and tedious.

alright, picked it up saturday night, and played through most of act 1 on sunday.

I mentioned to my friend that I was most interested in the story above all else, so he recommended that I at least play through it once on single player before jumping online, which I'm doing.

I decided to go with the amazon, javalin + shield at first, but then gambled a nice rare bow and went with the bow / crossbow talents since. got lucky and found a green pair of gloves that had knockback on it, which i find to be freakin' awesome with the bow.

I find that mana and life leech still seems to be pretty important in this game. I got a "of the bat" ring, which allowed me to switch to using magic missiles full time without worrying about mana at all.

I'm still getting used to the controls. My rightclick is magic missiles / normal attack, and I have explosive shot bound to my left click for group situtations, but half the time left clicking causes my character to run up to the group of mobs and get beat instead of firing.

I still have my grips from the first game, mainly inventory management. The private stash helps, but I'm filling that up at an alarming rate. I also found out the hard way that you can't leave items lying around in the base and exiting; they don't stay there. It also sucks that 95% of the nice gear that drops is unusable or designed for another class.

bleh. I played the economy game with world of warcraft, and im pretty bored with it. I had well over 100k gold in that game before i quit. I don't intend to do that again in D2... or ever for that matter.

THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.

TURN BACK NOW! YOU ARE JUST BEGINNING, SO YOU CAN STILL START OVER!

You can play single player online as well. There is no difference, except for the fact that you can also (if you ever wish to) jump on a server to play multiplayer.

For example, say you start a new character who is going to be your "online" character but your old, offline character has a bunch of gear he could use. If both characters were online, it would be easy to give gear to your new character, but since he is offline, this is in no way possible.

Also, if i had the rest of the set you are talking about laying around, I could have given it to you, but since you are an offline character, it's impossible as well. (I do have a bunch of zon sets, low and high, just laying around)

Your single player character can never go online. It is useless!

Yeah, you have very limited space in Diablo 2. It gets very slightly better after act 2. You installed the expansion, right?

You can only keep very limited things. At high levels, most people create mules to carry all the extra awesome gear that they find, but since you are playing offline, you can't do that.

It also sucks that 95% of the nice gear that drops is unusable or designed for another class.

At high levels, you could trade this gear for gear that you can use or just save it for a new character you are going to make. But since you are playing offline, you just have to sell it (usually for much less than it would actually be worth if you traded it).

D2 Nerds rank pretty high in the Nerd Hierarchy... Probably right below SC Nerds.

Don't get me wrong, I loved D2... replayed it like a million times... but was never into farming/trading/min-maxing chars/pvp/griefing the shit outta noobs/etc...

Loved the lore/story and that's mostly why I played it as well. Never bothered muling or anything. Just sold my extra unusable crap and was happy with whatever I found playing through. Its not like you NEED to trade for l33t gear to enjoy or beat the game anyway. Some people love that aspect though.
