So my friend has never ridden a motorcycle before...

beer

And is debating between a 600CC Triumph and GSX-R.

Any advice? I can't use the 'motorcycles are stupid and deadly' arguement since I've ridden em before. Just not anything that powerful.

Tell him to get a smaller bike unless he wants to become road pizza. Bigger bikes are for more experienced riders.

Bingo. Start out on something like a Honda Shadow, or an older 450 CC Nighthawk. No sense in learning with all that power.

Another something to think about; both of those bikes are clad in highly expensive plastic panels. I guarantee that your friend will drop the bike once or twice. It takes some practice to learn to maneuver 400+ lbs around at slow speeds. I'd strongly suggest getting something without all the plastic for a first bike.

Tell him to buy a less expensive model. That way he can use the money he saves to pay for his funeral.

Newbie + race bike = a fast dead

a Newbie MUST use a low power , light , easy handling bike

Take the MSF course and get a cheap, older 500 - 750cc (Honda Hawk, older BMW, whatever... something without a full fairing). Use the money saved to get a full set of cordura or racing leathers, a decent Arai or Shoei helmet, and some boots. You always drop your first bike a couple times, so there's no need to get anything nice and new.

The following summer, sell the old bike and get something decent. And take the advanced MSF course.

Or he could get the new Triumph 600 or GSXR-1000 and no safety gear... and we'll take bets on how long he lives.

Also, there's no need to worry about looking cool or going fast. _Most_ motorcycles look cool, and almost all are faster than the fastest cars.

Bwhaha... 😀

For those two bikes, just have him look into full coverage insurance with personal injury protection coverage. He'll be paying somewhere in the $1000.00+ range per year just on insurance.

Over here... i got quoted for something like $3k a year... thats almost half the bike per year. 🙁 Lots of BiKeR bOyZ buy new liter bikes and crash them... claim them... and then buy new ones. 🙁

Personally i would get a used honda cbr600f4i, i hear its a good all around bike for beginners and advanced riders, but all bikers that i've talked to recommends a 500cc bike, something small in size as well, but imma stay away from bikes smaller in size (don't care about engine) since i am a pretty big person, thus it'll just make me look funny.

My boss has never ridden jacksquat... bought a friggin Harley Fatboy (1450ccs of V) as his first bike.

Said he knew a lot of guys around his neighborhood that had them and wanted in... *sigh*

We have a word for those kinds of people... "wannabe"

My friend/coworker owns a nice little 400cc Yamaha cruiser. He started with a 250cc cruiser. Too many people I know have gotten into enough trouble with a friggin 250-500cc sportbike... most that have attempted a start with the liter demons end up dropping the bike pretty quick.

As always, I suggest he learn to ride on something like a Honda XR200 dirt bike. The dirt doesn't hurt as much to crash on, and there isn't much traffic to worry about. Also learning to control slides is extremely important. I think the best street riders rode dirt bikes first.

Then move on to the street bikes where there is much more danger.

For the street I'd say get a used Kawasaki EX500 to learn on. If he has a lot of self control (unlikely) then maybe an Honda CBR600 F2. They are great bikes, not too expensive, and would be more than enough for him for quite a while.

Make sure he takes the Motorcycle Safety Course.

Like, 92% of people that get in wrecks on motorcycles have NEVER taken the course.
