so yesterday i get an IM while at work from someone i haven't talked to in about a year. it was a friend from college that i mainly talked to online while i went there, not someone i hung out with. we were in a few classes together and what not as well. but anyways ..

so yesterday he asks me if i know how to make some quick $$$. he told me he could not tell me what he needed the $$ for though. i am like "uuuh get a job?" and he said he needed it really soon. he then said he needed it FASTER. i told hiim a loan. he then told me he doesnt have any credit built so that is a no go. i then am like joking around and say "dude i don't know, just steal a car or something" and he's like "well i honestly thought about that but i don't know who to sell it to.

at that point im like WTF? i then am like "dude just sell drugs or something, sounds like you owe some drug $$$ anyways." and he's like "well its not drugs, but it is a lot of money." i'm like "how much $$ is it?" and he tells me $6000. then im like "how the hell did you get $6000 in debt?" and he said from gambling.

he got $6000 in debt from gambling online. i was like "how did you get so far in debt? why do you play such high stakes if you aren't any good?" he then claims "its not that, i am good at poker, really good." my response was "if you are so good why did you lost $6000?" and he said "its just some times you have a good day and some times you have a bad day. i had a few bad days." and then i was like "well i am about $50 up in my party poker account so i guess i'm better than you" kinda joking around. he then says "i can go up $200 in minutes if i want." and then i responded "so then why don't you just go to that and get your $$$ back?" ...

anyways, this went on for a lil bit ... but let me ask you guys something. how can someone who is NET $6000 in debt be a good poker player? technically speaking, sure maybe he knows how to play well and the guys played better than him. but still, to loose $6000 you can't be that great, atleast not have a straight head on your shoulders if you get that much in the hole thinking you are so good ... what do you all think?

CLIFFNOTES FOR LAZY FVCKERS:
1. friend ims me and says he's in debt and needs suggestions how to make quick $$$$
2. i give him some ideas and he declines, then i ask him why he's in debt.
3. he's $6000 in debt in online gambling.
4. i tell him he must not be very good at poker since he lost $6000 and how did he get so far if hes not that good.
5. he tells me he's good and that he just had a bad day blah blah.
6. question: if he's so good, why did he lose $6000 ...

I don't understand the idea of online gambling? If you're good at poker - you should play in real life, since then you get to see and analyze other people's emotions, bluff etc.... Online poker is just pure gambling.

He might be a good player playing against great players. Poker's weird that way - it is almost as much about playing the people sitting around you as it is the cards you get. You have to be decent at reading people and I can't imagine it being any easier doing it online.

I had a friend who got into the sports betting with a 'bookie'. He lost $2500 TWICE. The first time, a group of friends helped him out. The second time, his parents bailed him out. There were 'gentlemen' at the door on one occasion asking for money, 2 rather large and unsavoury characters. That was the first time and those of us who were there (it was in school, picture a party house if you will) decided we had to help him out because hiding him in the house whilst angry dudes were outside was not cool.

$6000 is a hefty chunk of change - I hope your buddy learned his lesson.

EVERYBODY thinks they're good at poker... a guy here at work quit his job because he thought he was good enough at poker to make a living... 3 months later, he's back now

your friend is a gambling addict. he needs to seek help. do not loan him money or encourage him to continue gambling; he will only pull you down with him.

Addict? Please. You don't know the guy. He messed up and went down the tube. That doesn't make him an addict. He just sucks.

Probably his only viable ooption. And he deserves it for being a dumb F. I love how people think they are good at poker. Well, these days 50% of peole know how to really play so making a profit isn't as easy anymore. 10 years ago, 10% knew what they were doing and you could make a living taking money from suckers at a casino. Today though. jsut forget about it.

like they say, poker is like sex, everybody thinks they are better than they really are.

Anyways, if he is decent then he should be properly bankrolled for the game and would move down in stakes once his bankroll starts dwindling.

I have a feeling that he was getting a good rush of cards when he first started, went up quite a bit, but now when he runs in to a bad run of cards, he doesn't know how to deal with it.

Anyways, He doesn't seem that good at poker. At least I think he is playing out of his leagues.

I would advise you not to lend him money. Good players do not need somebody to stake them typically.

And although I don't consider poker gambling, they say the best rule of gambling is not playing with what you can't afford to lose.

I don't even know how he gets in to debt as you have to deposit in most of the sites. They usually don't accept credit cards.
