So my first attempt at donating blood didn't go too well...

D'oh. 😱

Gave blood today for the first time at a blood drive at work. Got in, got stuck, filled the bag in a matter of about 5 minutes...which was quicker than just about anyone else that was in there. I was in and out before 4 other people that had started before me.

So I finish up, go sit down for a few minutes, and have a glass of water. I feel fine and get up and leave.

I head to the can and while I'm at the urinal I just start getting woozy...got so bad that I banged my head against the wall. I managed to get zipped up and somehow over to the room where they registered us to donate.

They all freak out because I'm white as a ghost and sweating really bad. So I had to lay down for a few minutes and eventually got some cake & more water.

Not a really great first donating experience. 🙁

Cliffs notes:

- Donated blood
- nearly passed out in bathroom
- got a piece of cake out of deal

🙂

You should always get something to eat after donating blood (a cake, or a cookie)...

They had some little snacks on the bus (mobile clinic) but I was going to head in and grab some cake back in the office...didn't make it that far.

Tactical error on my part.

Oh God. In my freshman year of college I had a few drinks after donating blood (donated it Friday morning, drank Friday night) and boy did I get messed up real quick.

You fared better than me. I just donated blood for the first time last week, and I good really lightheaded, my stomach ached, and eventually I vomited. I guess it was from a combination of factors, such as my weight (130+lbs), my lack of sleep, and my nervousness. Oh well, donating blood isn't for everyone.

I am not allowed to donate blood.

I lived in the UK from 1989 thru 1996. Mad Cow Scare. We only ate Organic, free range or 'natural' meat when we actually ate meat, but the Red Cross still will not accept my blood.

I would donate whenever possible if they would.

🙁

Oh... and to the OP... drink OJ.

yeah, you went into shock

i do that when i get a tiny vial taken for a blood test

that is why i don't give blood. i go into shock like that everytime they take a tiny amount for a blood test, if i gave a whole pint i would DIE

I had the same experience the first time I gave blood. Don't give up, it doesn't have to be that way. Just be sure to have some food shortly before you give, and then something sweet after and you should be fine.

Shouldn't piss immediately after donating blood. Seriously. I don't know the medical details but something about emptying the bladder can trigger a loss in blood pressure and your pressure was already low after giving blood. That's the same reason some men have near black-outs (or actually pass out) if they stand up and piss immediately after waking up. I had that problem a few years back. Stress plays a factor.

Anyway, I'm sure someone can explain it MUCH better than I have.

Kudos on giving blood! 🙂
