Is there a big difference between 1080i and 720p at 50"? (most things aren't in 1080p yet so I don't mind too much not getting it)

Thanks

Complete trash. I would find the nearest baseball bat and put the set out of it's misery.

I wouldn't shame my house with a 720p set.

really?
I mean I've been hearing lots of negative things about big 720p's...
I was trying to persuade them to get a 40 inch 1080p for around the same price but they wouldn't...

it also depends on the quality of the incomming signal and the cables used

Check out the avsforums, everyone loves the kuro :)

also according to the chart posted above, 720p is plenty for most people

So
Does that mean that the worse the quality of the cables/signal, the less the difference in quality between the 2 types of TVs?
And the better the quality of the cables/signal, the better the 1080i looks over the 720p?

Actually, looking at it closer, it looks like 3 yards... still I guess that the 720p isn't too bad then

so what did you end up getting?

i was tempted to order the 46" 1080P Sharp LCD from frys (1299) but I don't want to downgrade in size from a 50" 720P DLP.

At 4-ish yards I don't think there would be huge benefit...even with 50". I agree with the graph ElFenix posted, which would seat your parents right where they should be with what they got.

I also question whether or not your parents can tell the difference anyway though...keeping in mind how technologically advanced they are

A 720p Kuro will put the hurt on most 1080p sets. Regarding image quality, overall resolution should be ranked below several other factors like black levels and color reproduction.

I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i from 6' away on a 46" lcd, or a 46" rear projection.

Your parents will appreciate the larger television much more than they would the higher resolution. They made the right decision in not listening to you.:p

The funniest thing in all this is people used to just by whatever CRT set at the best price/size. Now they are spec fan-boys.

I recommend monster cables for the best sound quality.

Of course, it means nothing if you don't have a good audio system. I recommend Bose.

We just got a 50" Samsung HLT5089S LED DLP for $1299. We had a 720P plasma for a little bit and this 1080P LED DLP has far better picture quality. We usually watch from ~ 7 to 8ft. away.
