So my best friend moved off, miss my mom (my only family - deceased last year) sigh.

Don't even know where I'd begin on a musical side. Considering I cant chew gum and walk at the same time and coupled with the fact I have '0' ability to stay in beat with music - it'd probably end badly.

Here ya go...

Seriously. It helps if you're into traditional Irish music, but it isn't essential. Pennywhistle is fun, and fairly easy to play. It's also a rare instance of getting more than you pay for. You can have a professional instrument for less than $10.

The above site looks low budget, but I can personally vouch for them. It's been awhile, but I've bought numerous whistles from them in the past. The set I linked is a great starter set, and has some fun to play music in it.

Dammit, now I want a pennywhistle, but I doubt I'd spend enough time with it to justify the purchase. Though for $10...there are worse things to waste my money on.

You should give it a shot. I probably have 30+ whistles in various keys, including some I made myself. I have a couple in my Jeep, and they're stashed in various places around the house. They make a good travel instrument since they're simple, and for the most part durable. If it gets lost or broken, you're not out major money. You can pay big money for custom instruments, but traditionally they're just plain old over the counter purchases.

For an idea of the sound, it's kind of like the old recorder you probably played in school, but the tone is grainier, and not as sweet. It also has 6 holes instead of 8.

Here's a blistering whistle track...

Something a bit more traditional...
