I have two really good friends that are roomates, lets call them Bob and Tom. Bob is my very best friend, and Tom is also a really good friend of mine. Anyways, Bob and Tom used to be really good friends until they started living together about a 1.5 years ago, since then they have complained how they dont like living with each other. Bob is the much more responsible one; he keeps up with all the bills and rent, pays for everything himself through a job and scholarships. Tom gets his dad to pretty much pay for everything, has not had a job in quite some time (I think over a year) and pretty much only goes to school and plays video games, but is fun to hang out with.

Anyways enough about that, Bob got the phone bill for last month and the bill was 1500$ dollars! Apparently what happened was somebody went on a website and clicked I agree on something, and it dialed in long distance to a company in England that charges 6.99 and minute! Bob only gets online to check e-mail and do homework, so he was postitive it was Tom that did this cause Tom is always online and playing games like WOW online. From what I know, Tom knew about the bill but did not admit to anything.

Last night Bob went on Tom's computer and found out through the internet history left on his machine (This happened midnight October 16th I believe) that it was indeed Tom's fault. He (of course) wants Tom to pay the bill, and have nothing to do with it.

I am still waiting to see what happens between them, but it saddens me that this will probably break up there long friendship :( However, it what Bob did legal? Tom's machine is in the living room, pretty much free for anyone to use.

EDIT

Check out the company that did this to them Premier Premium. They just started getting some claims against them about this type of stuff. Check out the FAQ too...... I would like to take whoever made this company and beat them with a baseball bat on a curbside :|

Fred and Ralph

their names are Fred and Ralph, not Bob and Tom

p.s. neither of them have to pay the bill, these kind of scams are illegal, and they should just not pay it

Whose name is the phone bill in? If its in Bob's...Bob is fvcked. He should know that the dumbass irresponsible guy should be the one to get easy to abuse utilities like the phone in his name. If its in Tom's name...its all good because the phone will just get disconnected and fvck Tom.

Explain the deal to the phone company. They're usually rather compliant when an odvious scam is involved.

I just talked with Bob and he got the bill lowered to 300$, but I dont think he can get it lower than that. Basically the website makes money off of doing this and actually has an FAQ with questions like "Why did I get charged?" and "What if I dont pay?". I will get the website name from him afterwhile from him so I can check out the FAQ.

Oh btw, the phone bill is actual under Bob's moms name, but Bob and Tom split the bill.

Call the phone company, I wouldn't pay it. Also, tell him to go to broadband already, than you would never have this problem.

Hopefully "Bob" doesn't end up getting stuck with the bill. Friends and roommates are two different things. I have friends I wouldn't room with for good money.

A class of malware known as dialers will dial 1-900 numbers owned by the virus writer if you have a modem installed.

Nobody is responsible for paying that company a dime. They need to contact their phone company.

READ MY LIPS :lips: YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY THE BILL TO THE SCAMMERS

LINK -READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY THE $300

Here's What to Do...

1) Clark prefers that you not pay your telephone bill even if your long distance company threatens to cut off service. The odds are you will never see the money again.

2) Put the charges in dispute with your long distance company and let them know you are filing a complaint with your local public utilities commission if they attempt to cut off your service. Also, consider switching to one of these free or low-cost long distance services.

3) File a complaint with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) about the company and the charges.

4) Review your telephone bill carefully each month. And ask that your local phone company block your phone from making international calls if you have no need to make them.

It's plain fraud so nobody is responsible.

Have them take it up with the fraud dept. of the telephone or cable/dsl provider.

Pointing fingers at each other will damage your friend's friendship. Act as an intermediary to get them to work together to solve this fraudulent charge.

I can tell you that if I was in their shoes, I WOULD NOT pay this charge. It's stupid to pay for some fraud charge. Take it all the way as far as it can go......in the end, if all results in having to pay the charge, I'd take the hit on my credit--especially if you're young. After some years, it'll be wiped away--just in time when ready to buy a house. ;)

BTW, I used to work at a phone company and witnessed positive resolutions on behalf of consumers.

If you're able to form a convincing case of fraud with proof of website, then the phone company fraud dept. will forgive the bill. Talk to a VP or Sr. Executive--they have the power to overrule any lower sob phone exec.

Even paying a partial amt. is claiming guilt. Persist! Deal with Sr. phone personnel. Your friends should get their way! Call the BBB for advice and help as well.
