I was never really a good student back then, I graduated with a GPA of 2.76 but I was ok with it because I didn't have the intention to go to grad school. Then my father told me to go for the MBA program, I know I should up my GPA and also the GMAT score. I took 3 classes last quarter and up the overall GPA to 2.9, my GMAT score was 550 with everything above 50% percentile except the English portion (30%)...damn, it doesn't help that I am a foreign student. I got the letter from the college today, they rejected me for 2 reasons: 1. English portion on GMAT below their minimum standard (they want every portion above 50 percentile) 2. GPA in the last 60 semester units too low. Now I look at their record, I am surprise that they didn't take the 3 classes which I took last quarter into consideration! So they still think my GPA is around 2.7...
Now, this is what I think....
The school I apply to is in no way a prestige school, they do have their requirement and I just barely miss it. I really want to talk to the Director of the MBA program and see if I could get any break from him, because obviously I didn't get any. I have 2 years of working experience...How do you guys think I should approach this? Needless to say, I am very down right now.

talk director then, or file an appeal (i'm not familiar with the grad school processing). good luck, it's not the end of the world anyhow. there's still mcdonalds and 99 cent double cheeseburgers.

The thing that's so frustrated to me is this, I really wanted a fresh start somewhere, and I look at this as a great opportunity to regain myself. Now I know I got turn down...just makes it so much harder to swallow.

^^ for more advice.

It's going to be difficult because you were rejected for two reasons. It's hard to ask for a little slack when there are two obstacles to overcome.

You have nothing to lose by talking to whoever is making the decisions. Since most people probably show up to beg for special treatment, you could take a different approach by saying you very much want to attend their MBA program, and ask what you have to do to get accepted. You'll either find out exactly what you need to do, or perhaps an exception will be made for you just for being so enthusiastic. If you are told that you have to do X, Y and Z to get accepted, then as a fallback position just ask if there is any way you can get a provisional acceptance now because you know you can do the work and just need a chance to show it.

Explain that your GPA was bad because you didn't really feel like doing your best at the time because you had no plans for grad school. Now that you are older and more mature, you regret the time you were a poor student. Point out that your last term's grades were much better.

On another topic, why would you go for an MBA just because your father told you to?

I've seen few MBA programs accept scores that are that low. I too, have low grades, only a 3.2, haven't taken the gmats yet. I was discouraged from applying to many schools simply because my GPA wasnt 3.5 or over. And besides, I wonder just how useful an MBA from a crappy school is gonna be worth in the workplace.

well, it kinda related to what I studied in undergrad so MBA is more fitted to me than other majors. One thing I worry is that I might not be able to talk to the guy who makes the decision, often time, the front lady (usually a MBA student herself) will ask me and try to answer my question on her own. Mmm...should I call or go to the office?

A little advice. If you aren't applying to a prestigious, or even quasi-prestigious MBA program, scrap the plan altogether. It's not going to help you. MBAs are a dime-a-dozen and especially in this market, a non-impressive MBA is pretty much worthless for the job hunt.

If you're a minority go apply to Michigan.

Why so? Which school you mean?

University of Michigan accepted minority students with inferior credentials to white students. I'm not sure if they still are after that screwy Supreme Court ruling.

Why do you want to get an MBA? Do you really want to? or just because to please your parents. If it's the latter then I feel sorry for you.

Well, part of that is from my parents, part of that is from myself. I have thought it out, if I want to be somewhat a successful person and achieve something in my life, MBA should provide the path for it. I mean I am no good in other area, if this fails me, everything else will. And sadly, it fails me :(

Personally I believe that anyone who has not mastered the English language should be admitted to Grad schools.

success isnt defined solely by academic achievement. if you have a bachelors, make a nice living for yourself, and, most importantly, are happy with your life... then dont let your parents dictate what is good

dude, if you're not going to do it entirely for yourself, then don't do it at all... grad school isn't about getting the higher degree to make the extra money... you do it because it's a step in the direction you want to go in life..

that's how i see it anyways...

if you still think that everything else will fail you because you can't get into grad school, then, well, i don't know what to say... you shouldn't let your rejection from grad school dictate your future.

Do something that will make your application look better and take the GMAT again after you have studied English more. After you do that, apply again.

But if you're not going to a good MBA school, then it might not be worth it.

Umm...Unless it's different where you are from the double cheeseburgers are $1.00.

I've taken courses by the profs of the AGSM school of Management there. They suck, though I did get easy A's.

If its any help, the dean of AGSM is very easy to talk to, but firm on all decisions.

Atleast you have work experience.

I have a 3.59 gpa and 610 GMAT, 5 months of work experience and Rutgers wait listed me. I think it is because of the work experience, they are looking for people with at least 2 years.

But you're only young once and I want to do the PhD program as well.

I'll know in 2-3 weeks what their decision is.
