I've been using cheap generic PSUs for years, now. I never thought about buying anything else than what comes inside of a $30 ATX case/PSU combo. I've never, ever had a problem with any of them.
Then I upgraded in late August, 2005, and for reasons I will not get into here I bought an Antec SmartPower 2.0 350W for my new system. In December, 2006, it started acting up. Today I took it apart and discovered bad caps.
What's the deal? Are costly PSUs actually worth it? I'm increasingly tempted to say there's no good reason to buy anything more than what comes with the case.
So, here's my real question: I had bought an Ultra V-Series for free after rebate, which I am now using in place of the Antec. However, that means I need another PSU for the system on which I was formerly planning to use the Ultra. If I get another V-series (a different model, but the same manufacturer and retailer), will OnRebate honor the deal, or am I limited to one free PSU per household?
