Common Core? :awe: J/k

When I was in school my teacher had us do word pyramids. It works well, like this:

b
bl
bli
bliz
blizz
blizza
blizzar
blizzard

I do not have kids and have not actually -seen- the ways of this common core mess, but I have heard all about it from co-workers and the news in general. I hear a lot of the math is done with pictures and symbols now? Is your link actually how it's taught now? God help the children that are coming into the world these days. They're in for a serious ride.

But it isn't taught ONLY that way. They learn multiple ways of solving the same problems and I'm OK with that. They still learn the traditional ways as well. There is nothing wrong with showing multiple ways to solve a problem IMO.

I see lots of people giving half the picture when it comes to Common Core. Usually it comes down to parents that never grasped math in the first place (not referring to anyone here btw, just in general).

Eh, my wife got a 36 on the math part of the ACT. She hates common core math. :p

lol, well I only got like a 33 so I suppose that's why I like (well, tolerate) it. It's better for us simple minded people!

Also, the traditional way of teaching math was stupid. I'm sure the majority of folks on this board have no trouble adding 13,871 and 5,299 in their heads, and I'm guessing not a single one would do that by lining those numbers up and going column by column, carrying the one, yada yada yada. That works fine if you have a pencil and paper, but that's just rote memorization of a tool; it doesn't actually help you visualize how numbers go together. And if you don't have a pencil and paper? Well, maybe that's why everyone in our country is so shitty at math.

So, yeah, I know it's cool to shit on common core, but it's not like the old system was turning out the best math students the world has ever seen. There's nothing wrong with bringing a new approach to the table if it actually improves student understanding of the underlying concepts.

My 2nd grader is in advanced math in school now because I've taught him the simple methods to all of it. Common core methods are silly.
