I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I've never done it before...so forgive my ignorance.

first...it asks to start or install...and what I think it means is start (liveCD) then install...but I got past that.

Second...I click on the install icon and I'm trying to get through the keyboard layout...only to find that because my resolution is at 600x800 I can't actually see the dialog box keys...I'm guessing that there is an "OK" or "apply" button, but I can't see it. I can't resize the dialog box, which is dumb, and worse, I can't even move it up to see the bottom. So there I sit at the stupid timezone page. I can't tab to the accept key...if there is one. I hit enter and it does nothing but open the selection box...ARGH! Very frustrating.

I then thought I would edit the x11org.conf file to include my correct monitor...but realized that since I'm booted into the LiveCD environment, I can't change that.

can anyone suggest a course of action that can help me get past this installation craziness?

thanks

I suggest trying the Ubuntu "alternate" command-line installer CD instead. It's odd that your resolution is only 800x600 by default (not big enough to see the install dialog apparently). You can, if you didn't know, hold down the alt key and click in the middle of a window to move it however you want. You can also change /etc/X11/xorg.conf under a LiveCD environment, although you shouldn't need to. I'd file a bug if I were you. You can't expect software to be 100% bug-free and with your hardware it apparently didn't detect the biggest resolution correctly.

I just used the old "hold down the alt key and pound the keyboard" technique. That with the "tab and guess" trial and error method, got me through the install process. When I was just in the shower, I thought about the text mode option...forgot that one.
