So much for my perfect driving record...

My last ticket was almost four years ago (speeding), I've managed to stay pretty clean since. Pulled over a couple times for stupid stuff but never any violations.

Got nailed for running a red on my way home from work tonight, I didn't realize that the two reds in a row weren't synchronous. I've always treated them as one with no problem (only been here a couple months), but he says the first was red when I went through (I'm not 100% sure), the second was green when I went through. Cop's line was "Even in Oregon you aren't allowed to go through a red light to get to a green." It makes sense now that he explained the intersection timing to me, but he still wrote me up for it.

He did say that if I request a hearing he'll reduce it to a section that won't involve points (or insurance increases). (Why'd you write me up in the first place then?)

Anyway, my questions for those in PA are:

How does your point system work?

How do non moving violations show on your record? (I guess that's what I'll end up with - failure to obey a traffic control device or some nonsense like that)

Are non moving violations reported to insurance companies?

$105 intersection lesson.

I guess.

I misunderstood how they two signals worked together, & went by the green.

Was the other one red? I don't know.

Don't you look at traffic signals when you drive through them instead of worrying about the timing?

So, what? There was a red light at one intersection, and a green light at the next, and you drove through the red one to get to the green one?

Fail to obey a traffic device is points here in NY. 2 points in most areas.

I have not had a non moving effect my insurance rates.

From the Pennsylvania DMV site

What is the Pennsylvania point system and how does it work?

The Department of Transportation maintains a driving record for every licensed driver in Pennsylvania. Points are added to a driving record when a driver is found guilty of certain driving (moving) violations. The purpose of the point system is to help improve driving habits and to ensure safe driving. The Department begins to take corrective actions when a driving record reaches 6 or more points. 'The Pennsylvania Point System' brochure (DL-71P) is now available for downloading on this Web site.

Oh yeah, to save you some time: DL-71P

Need more info, Gregg. I know you're not a dumbfvck, but I really hope you're not suddenly IQ-less (notfred's post). MS Paint drawing, even? Can you go on about safe stopping distances according to your speed and how far away from the intersection you were?

Bah... you'll figure it out. :) Good luck.

It's an intersection where a left hand turn yields to oncoming traffic.

First there is a protected left, then unprotected. Oncoming traffic then stops (and apparently the red light that I "ran" stops at the same time), & there is still an unprotected left green to allow traffic to clear the intersection. The stop point for the first light is directly under the light, you can't see the light when you've stopped for it.

The lights are separated by a few car lengths.

And rpbri2886 I do pay attention. I don't remember for sure, but I think it may have just turned yellow when I went through. The second light (unprotected green left) was definitely green when I went through, but the first light (directly over my head) may have been red at that point.

That helps a lot, thanks.

He wrote me up for a 3112 violation, that's three points.

Gawd DAMN, Viper, you could have picked a better state to move to instead of one with some seriously effed up traffic signals :p

Anytime, sorry to hear about it though...

BTW, Nik, unless I'm understanding Viper incorrectly, I can't say I've ever seen that kind of setup over here.

Oh? I guess I'm just used to the simple, basic traffic control signals over here. Nothing's really that complicated, but I've heard of some really odd-functioning and confusing "control devices" in other states.

Nothing overly complicated here; I've never seen lights spaced that close together.

Intersection in Question

I was headed NW on Morganza, taking a left onto Adams Ave. The light I supposedly ran is between the tracks & the intersection (immediately at the start of the intersection), the green left hand indicator is immediately across the intersection. So they're probably what... 40 feet apart tops?

Oncoming traffic was stopped (from Euclid to Morganza), traffic both directions on Adams was stopped.

Vic I've been here about two & a half months. Left Oregon in late June, three day drive here with my stuff in the back of an F-150.

I've done this kind of thing in Lodi before. Almost got hit because at the last second someone turned their signal off and went straight in the same kind of a setup.
