So much for ESPN NFL 2k6... :(

Hmmmm, interesting. This was heavily rumored early this year, but it never turned out to be true. I hope this isn't true, as competition is only good. I prefer EA sports titles, but damn them for bullying others out. First it was the NASCAR license, possibly now football?

I'll need to see this from a more reputable source before I believe it.

EDIT: Gamespot confirmation. Fvking greedy ass EA bastards :|

IT'S TRUE 🙁 - Yahoo
From the Yahoo article:
EA Enters into Exclusive Agreements with NFL and PLAYERS INC to Expand and Integrate Customer Entertainment Experience
To expand? We'll see about that I guess. So when will they get their greedy hands on the NBA and MLB license?

They bought this at the end of the Xbox and PS2 lifespan so there will be no ESPN NFL games on the next gen systems until well into their lifespan.

this sucks. I like espn football and basketball much better. now, whats to stop ea from pushing the envelope?

Agreed. I like ESPN NFL 2K5 and NBA 2K5 over their Madden and NBA Live. Ugh. 🙁

And this is not a monopoly? Someone call the DOJ. ESPN NFL rocks.

Hardly. NFL is a brand, they can choose to allow or disallow anyone from using their logo and anything such as team logos, player names, etc.

Anybody can make a football game, they just can't use NFL without paying NFL for the rights. NFL has now agreed to give that right to only one company. Perfectly legal.

Stupid EA...they did the same with the rights to Nascar games, so only they could make their precious POS racing sims.

Now this..

Espn could still get around it i believe, they just would not be allowed to use player names, nor stadium and team names, however everything could be modeled after players etc, just different names.

That's just great. One great thing about ESPN NFL games is that they were only 20 bucks, which eventually forced EA to drop madden to 30. Now they'll probably charge 60 bucks for it.

boooo to EA and boooo to the NFL for letting this happen

Call them yourself, you lazy bum. 202-514-2000

As has been pointed out, this is by no means a monopoly. If you were going to consider this a monopoly, then you'd have to consider the NFL itself a monopoly.

Interesting, the article on ESPN states they've already got FIFA and PGA exclusive licenses... No wonder there havent been any other real good soccer or golf games.

Yeah, just turn it into a college football game.

Something that I did not really know from the ESPN article (but would've figured it out if I thought about it), EA now owns exclusive rights to the NFL, NASCAR, FIFA, and the PGA Tour. Only things left are MLB, NHL, and NBA. EA is pussying out to the competition. It'll be interesting to see what Sega/Visual Concepts will do now. They can either make a generic football game (which was fine in the early 90's, not now, look at Madden 64), or not put out any football game at all. No matter what you guys say, no one will buy an unlicensed football game.
