I'm not that familiar with his diet, but I don't think diet is responsible for infections. I saw him on tv also and he looks ok for his age.

"We have been treating this condition, cardiomyopathy, for almost two years," said Patrick Fratellone, Atkins' personal physician and cardiologist. "Clearly, his own nutritional protocols have left him, at the age of 71, with an extraordinarily healthy cardiovascular system."

<<Dr. Clyde Yancy, a cardiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a member of the American Heart Association's national board of directors, said: "Despite the obvious irony, I believe there is a total disconnect between the cardiac arrest and the health approach he (Atkins) popularizes." >>

Like the doctor said, it's ironic, but the diet had nothing to do with it.

I was agreeing with you AmusedOne. I was stating the obvious to some who not might see it.

Cardiomyopathy is not caused by diet, so those of you who think you see some irony here are looking pretty stupid.

Now, if you want to talk about Jim Fixx, that would be a different story.

Oils are better for you than grease. Oils are one of the most under-rated staples in the American diet. If you don't take in enough oil then expect some very painful bouts with the old gall bladder. The average American diet is pretty borderline on the oil intake, so gall bladder disease is becoming all too common. People just mistake oil for being bad.

Was he the "runner" guy? If so he had a VERY long family history of heart problems.

#1 - he is old
#2 - what happened was not related to diet at all. he has no blockages in his arteries
#3 - atkins diet is just not burgers and bacon, if you follow the diet a huge portion of it is vegetables and fruit since that is where you are supposed to get all your carbohydrates on this diet.

vi_edit,

Yep, he wrote the complete book of running. Dropped dead of a massive at 47. He always had very high cholesterol, but seemed to believe that exercise alone was enough. Guess who personally tried to convince him otherwise? Yep, Dr. Atkins.

PS: I've never tried the Atkins Diet personally, because, in my case it's not necessary. But, a friend of mine who is diabetic follows it religiously and, even at 60 years old, he has numbers that put most people to shame.

Yep. The American public has had "fat free" and "low in fat" shoved down their throats for way too long, when for most people the real problem is sugar and other refined carbs.

hey Russ, how old were Mr. Fixx's brothers and father when they died? that's right, the running added MANY years to his life. half the information=poor supposition. if living nine years longer than your dad while dying at 52 is ironic, then maybe you should write some songs for Alannis.

People on diets of all kinds have heart attacks. No news here. Actually, the only reason it is news is because our media likes to make it news.

#4 Most people don't follow the diet correctly which is what makes it so bad for them.
