the SFSU area is quite far away from downtown SF. yes you can take the L/M muni (i forgot which one) but it's indeed quite far away. It's good for the commute down to sunnyvale though as it's close to 280. However, it's not close any caltrain station (as you have mentioned caltrain in your post). Another area you can consider is SOMA, which is much closer to downtown SF if you are looking for nightlife and stuff. However, it's more expensive there and it may not fit your $1000 including parking budget. It's close to the 280 also so you don't need to worry about that. The SFSU/south sunset should be a nice area but it is further away from the 'stuff'.

How could it be far, SF is only a few miles wide. It is a very small city.

either SFSU area or SOMA area, you are looking at an approx 45-minute commute w/o major incidents.

I'm OK with that. Remember, EDGE cards rule. And since we're on the forefront of HSDPA....well, I have a leg up on all you GPRS suckers 🙂

EDGE sucks, and so does cingular. Its slow, only good thing is you can cheat and pay only $20 w/ medianet unlimited. And riding the caltrain sucks. Miss the baby bullet? Prepare to wait.

I guess I hate caltrain cuz taking it to the city is retarded, on the way back the buses never show up on time and I'd miss my train. I live in the south bay and my office is in the financial district, not that i ever have to go in, only when i'm on the beach

Oooh, acronym time

All of you need to STFU, DIAF, or GETFO, IIRC, everyone knows that in SF, Cingular EDGE service is FTW.

Why do you want to live in SF if you work in Sunnyville 😕

....some resemblence of a life...?

You'll be working 5 out of 7 days a week. I agree with PansyBoy8......drive into SF for weekend nights to party....save yourself a hour a day or more commuting. I'm not sure about Muni, but I know on BART I couldn't get work done. Every seat is taken by Concord and it still has like 10 stops after that before reaching the city.

I'm in a reverse commute sort of role. Thanks for the advice though, i'm headed out there within the next couple of weeks and I'll ask some of the other engineers about seat and parking availability.

Honestly, you think SF housing is expensive? Palo Alto still kills SF housing anyday.

Are you saying the housing in the suburbs cost as much as the city? Please clarify this...

I'm doing something similar to you where I live in SF and commute to Fremont everyday. I have to drive it since BART will get me close but not close enough. How close will the Sunnyvale Caltrain station be to your work? The main reason I am staying in SF is because I got a ridiculous deal on a one bedroom in-law for $500 in Sunset. I figure I'm not going to find a much better deal anywhere else in the bay area so I might as well stay in the city.

Palo Alto is expensive probably due to the presence of a major private university. East Palo Alto would be much more reasonable. I also wouldn't consider Palo Alto a suburb of SF since it is closer to San Jose. The main suburbs of SF would be Daly City, Colma, SSF, and maybe Burlingame or Millbrae. Colma (the city of the dead) would probably be the cheapest. I hear they're trying to lure residents with free internet now. Living in Daly City or Colma woudn't be that bad as you're much closer to shopping (Costco, BB, CC, Target, etc.), you'll be closer to a Caltrain station, and getting downtown may actually be quicker than living in some parts of the city. Where I live in Sunset, it takes 30 mins to get downtown. Coming from Daly City, you could probably beat that. Even if you don't want to have to deal with parking downtown, you could just come into the city and park at Stonestown or West Portal or something and Muni it.

If you want a realistic approximation in housing costs, check out craigslist. You can narrow down the search to specific neighborhoods. For SF State area, you're looking at Ingleside.

so what company are you working for? you shouldn't have too much problem finding a place in the city if you room up with someone in a 2br place.. definately look in the ingleside/sfsu/ccsf area since you want to be near the freeway because of your commute.. you can find a 2br place for under 2k... did you look under the room/shares section on craigslist? there's a whole bunch of people who are looking for a roommate... all for under 1k

Palo Alto Atherton and Woodside and Portola valley are uber rich area....
i grew up in woodside.. average home is in the 4-6 millions..

yes San Fran area does not fit the so called City/Suburb rule..
you got to remeber all these suburbs were cities on thier own till Silicon valley joined the entire penninsula together into 1 huge city area...

there is PLENTY to do in South bay these days.. San Jose has just as many clubs and nightlife as san fran and has the Sharks and one of the best concert arenas in the world.. (Shark tank rules)
then you have The Edge in palo Alto... GREAT small club with HUGE name concerts...
also not to forget the Shoreline Theater..all the big concerts come here during the summer..
Then you have Santa Cruz just over the pass for beach access..

San fran is for Tourists.. you will get very tired of it very quickly and realize all the locals stay far away from San fran and either go to the beachs or mountains or wine country etc etc etc...

I lived there all my life.. moved away and except for cost of living miss it very much..

I work about 200 feet from the Sunnnyvale station. That's why I'm trying to architect my whole living situation around having an efficient commute.

What is the 280 like coming down through the city in the morning? How fast should I be able to go, if there are no accidents?

God, this sucks. If I want to take the caltrain in (since my office is RIGHT on the fscking route), I preetty much have to catch it at 22nd st. (no parking) or Millbrae (long way from stuff!). The affordable parts of SF means I have to drive to millbrae which tacks on another 15-20 min each way, no matter what. I can do 55 minutes, but I don't think I can do 75.

It doesn't look like there's anything happening anywhere near Millbrae which seems to codemn me to a sucky social life. I really don't want to live in the valley...I don't get along with about 80% of the techies and I actually have a desire to meet women of some sort. There's no way I can afford to live within walking distance of the 22nd street station. And there's no way I want to/can afford to drive the 40 miles on a daily basis, rather it's one of those things I'd like to have as an option (i.e., being on 280) but anytime I leave that open as an option means I'm increasing my commute to the only Caltrain station that I can park at (MIllbrae).

Man, this is a sucky optimziation problem if I've ever heard of one....

I think I know where you work 😉 Starts with a B?

Forget Caltrain too, it takes at least 1 hr. Seriously if you want to live in SF, your best bet is Mission/Noe Valley and commuting by car, maybe carpooling. A lot of people are doing it, so you should be able to find someone to carpool with. There is no point moving to Milbrae, it's not much better than Sunnyvale.
Or make friends with someone in SF so you can crash at their place one weekends.

Girlfriends parents live in South city.

While South city is boring in itself, the area they lived in wasn't bad at all, and getting into the city by car wasn't that bad to me (and mind you I'm used to Seattle traffic which is nothing compared to what you have down there).
