for christmas i want to get my dad some sort of networking thing so that he can access the internet (his computer is too far away from the router. so i'm looking at either wireless or a phonelline thing. wireless looks like it's freaking expensive... at 150+. so i was thinking about the phoneline.

but i had a few questions... do both computers have to be on? also, i have a router already, will this pose any difficulty?

then for wireless... his computer is one floor down and on the opposite side of the house. is this too far for wireless? is there any sort of adapter i can put on a normal router to make one of the jacks wireless? becuase i don't really want to have to buy another router when we only have 4 computers anyways...

are there any other solutions?

any input is appreciated, thanks!

If you have a router connected internally to a switch or hub handling the Internet connection only it has to be on, if a PC is handing the Internet access with ICS or some other form of NAT it has to be on.

how far from the router is yer dads PC and if its over the maximum length for a cat5 cable why not put a repeater in the way?

if you do a search someone will know how far cat5 can be in length...

What you wanna get is a wireless access point that will plug into one of the router's switch ports... this will act as a wireless hub. you don't need to get an additional wireless router. you will not need to have both computers on...
