So many problems Vista 64 (Premium)...

Hi,

I have so many errors and stability problems in Vista 64 it looks like I will need to reinstall after only one month (trying to keep my comuter super stable during that time as well).

My problem is that one of the errors that occurs is when I restart the computer. First time it does a long CHKDSK and claims it may have fixed the "problem". I reboot and it constantly shows (something close to 0x000000ea - its the Hard Drive error one) every startup halfway through the first Windows sign.

The only way to get past this is to do a repair using the Vista cd - which tanks a long time and is a pain to keep doing.

So is it the hard drive starting to die - or is it just a corrupt windows installation? (Also - what other information can I give?)

Thanks a lot,
Joe

STOP 0x000000ea has nothing to do with your hard disk.

But my first guess would be that the hard disk is dying or you've got a memory issue.

Thanks,

Specs are 8800GTS 320mb XFX XXX
4gb CORSAIR XMS2 2GB PC6400
e6600 stock
P5W-DH deluxe

Memtest reported no errors last time however I will try again later on just in case.

Also - Correction on the error - it is UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME STOP: 0x000000ED (I think) It only blinks for a second so it is dificult to see however I am prety sure thats it.

A quick search of the Microsoft Help & Support website points to hard disk problems. Have you tried the following?

1. Revert the BIOS to stock settings.
2. Run MemTest86+ to find possible memory errors.
3. Run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility on your hard drive.

1.Yes - unfortunately didnt help
2.Yes - however will run again in case
2.No

Thanks,
But I bought the HD from a custom PC website - what would be the easiest way to obtain the utility?

Ill also temporarily try to stop the reboot on errors however in the end I will have to reload windows OR get another HD anyways... For example I cant defrag because it is preparing for a CHKDSK every boot.

Thanks for everyones input so far...
Joe

Yes, in my small repair business I have seen quite a few bad 80 wire IDE cables. Those wires are just TOO thin. If I suspect hard drive problems, I immediately replace the IDE cable with a new one.

In response to the question "what would be the easiest way to obtain the utility?", the answer is the manufacturer of the hard drive. Pretty much all hard drive manufacturers have a web site, and on that web site are diagnostic utilities free for the download.
