so many dvd types!!

why is this so difficult?? oh k.. i was at an asian mall somewhere that sells pirated dvd's.. don't worry, my question isn't about pirating... but anyways.. i had bad experiences with them, sometimes, some don't work, some skips, arggg... so there's like dvd-8 dvd-9 and all that, so i was wondering... does any dvd player play all of those formats?? (i don't think the ps2 plays them.. haha) but yeah, are old dvd players also able to play those formats???

o.k... i just read the site you gave me.. i learnt that dvd-8-9 and all that is different sizes. but it doesn't tell me about whether there are specific dvd players required to play them....

but what i want to know is, how can you tell? does the dvd say if it can play dvd-8-9 ??? or do i just look at whether it can play dvd+/-r ??
