so many cards on mother board, help please!

hi, i was taking apart my old gateway, and as a newbie, i know little about whats inside. I look at the mobo and see many cards. i suppose a few are video cards and sound cards. But i see some that are used to attach the monitor......what are some of these cards called? i only knew of video cards, sound cards and a few others.....could you mabye tell me of some video cards and what they do? THANKS!!!

If the card has a vga or dvi port on it then it is a video card. If it has miniplug jacks then its a sound card. If it has ethernet port then its a NIC, so forth and so on. You will only have 1 of each.
