They could have easily done this on their end. Very sad. Less than a half day of development and testing.
I’ve stated this before, and I will state it again. I am more than happy to set up a new forum at a new domain if they give advance notice. Any active mods that want to stay would be allowed to be active as a mod on the new site. I’ve been following AT and the forums since the earliest days, even before I created my current (only?) account and this forum to me has the best vibes for me personally.
I also hope to build a reputable (and possibly non-profit! or at least an agreement not to sell or something, not looking to make a ton of money, just want to pay the bills and those materially involved, reviewers, hopefully mods, etc. Also, unless impossible, no ads or privacy invasions, including anything related to Google)
My current issue is that I am now disabled, suffering (non-life threatening) health issues, and I am regularly in therapy, so I would need a bit of time.
That being said, I have a domain I will reveal later (mods: are you okay with that? if so I can share.) and when I have time, I will start the process of setup. The forum software may not be the same.
I bring it up as an option. Regardless of that, hopefully the members find a place to go. I want to see these conversations continue! If I can get through my current physical therapy and such I can do some work before hand and be prepared.
Otherwise, I hope we do receive warning or can meet up somewhere.

We are legion everywhere but Reddit. Which is why that should not be an option. I'd prefer no more corpo overlords if we can swing it too. My point is that if they close the forums, we should have a consensus where to go. Because there are a lot of active posters here, and we could improve the culture at any tech board we mass migrate to.
I made this my home on the interwebz because Anand and crew were serving up the best content IMO. I also like the idea of a mass migration that would inject new life into another tech site. Ocforums is a ghost town and we could certainly change that for the better. I have no beef with the main site either. Which appears to be important criteria for some us. That the main site not be shameless shills like Tom's or TPU.
TechSpot is under the Future umbrella too. The forums there are an afterthought. PC Hardware is the only category and the last post was in July. Weak. All of the action there is under community. The number of replies to any news or review are low, and many of the discussions remind me more of our P&N forum than our tech forums.
If they close us down, I would think all of this juicy data for the brokers goes bye bye. No more ad revenue either. I just don't see why they'd do it while we are such an active board. But again, I am on board with OCforums as the next home. We could do some real good there.

Personally I'd be much more in favor of a forum set up specifically to replace this one, versus a mass migration. Because then you not only have a bunch of existing posters at that destination who may not take kindly to such an "invasion", but you have no guarantee that the new site won't be shut down like Anandtech was. And maybe when that new site is, they shut down the forums too so there isn't any way for everyone to figure out where to go.
So I like @eek2121's suggestion much better, and if he's got health challenges we've got a lot of techie types here who could help shoulder some of that load. And not to be morbid, but that's probably for the best anyway as you don't want to have everything resting on one person's health. Even someone who is young and in perfect shape can be hit by a bus.

I'm in favor of Eeek's plan as well. I'm also ready to put my money where my mouth is and donate to his costs if needed. I have nothing against OCForum, but I like having a place of our own. If we do this, at least two mods need account information to recover things if Eeek gets to a point where he is unavailable to run the forum.

I am opposed to a mass migration as we (understandably) may not be welcomed. I am also 100% against Reddit. The best solution I've heard so far is by @eek2121.

TPU forums: populated by a bunch of angry incels and over moderated. The kind of place that posts a news story about Tarrifs affecting computer parts then shuts down the whole conversation if you name the guy putting the Tarrifs in place because "no politics" 🤨
The Tech spot forums are definitely less moderated and generally easy pickings for a migration since the existing user base is not overly prolific, but as DP mentioned they are definitely an afterthought so if there are issues etc who knows if things get fixed or just get worse and worse from a technical perspective.
As much as I like the idea of an independent page, the issue is always going to be supporting a viable population of users. If only a couple dozen people follow over to an indie site, then there simply won't be enough new stuff to keep people coming back day after day and the place will slowly decay into irrelevance. You also still have the technical issue, but now hyper concentrated in one person.
Reddit is out of the question, my ass has a perma-ban there for some really silly shit and if others don't now, they definitely will eventually. Just honestly the worst moderation on the internet.
No easy answers to this one, although I'd be partial to going over to an existing but lightly populated site. Like @GodisanAtheist observed, it will result in stagnation. No point in trying to keep the band together if we are only going to play in the garage on a street with no thru traffic.

I had TPU in my mind when I wrote that. Not some semi dead forum. But I don't exactly want to jump there either.
I know the distributed computing community at ocforums.com would welcome @Markfw and the rest with open arms, lol. Really, in general I think everyone would be very welcome. The site used to be a really popular place for overlockers back in the day and maintained a data base to compare your CPU over clock with what others were getting, back when FSBs were still game and getting the right stepping was important. I think the main thing would be the need to have people willing to be mods as they will probably need more with the large increase in population.
Starting an independent forum would be cool too, but I think people underestimate the difficulties that can have as well.
Maybe we could convince OCForum to make an AT refugee section then?

I think the moderators are doing a good job, I think their hands are probably tied when it comes to how to handle things, and hence their approach is backwards. Instead of banning the shills and trolls that smear 💩everywhere, ruining every discussion, they lock the threads. 8GB VRAM discussions always get locked because the sycophants white knight wiz's work, even though his results conflict with most reputable reviewers.
There is an entire contingent there that is convinced raptor lake degradation is a vastly overblown issue/conspiracy. That it is not, and never was, a big deal. You cannot have a productive discourse with people living inside of reality distortion fields. They have already gaslit themselves; facts and empirical data are dismissed offhand, the backfire effect is powerful. As the kids say, the place can be a cringe fest.

The DC crew here seems tight nit. They already have their own discord. They would probably just use that and keep on keeping on?

I setup forums back in the early 2000s because a friend here talked me into it. I was using Tripod for hosting I think. If enough of the band here wants to stay together, I'll go wherever they decide. Hell, I think another discord channel would be better than someone having to setup and manage our own forums. Simpler that way. Some of us are connected on Bluesky to make communication easy, should we all go to log in one day and the forums are gone. @Indus was coordinating that I think?

It's like Trump.. people can't find perfection so they find apathy and nothing happens and the death of good stuff is all but certain. I suppose that'll happen here too.. can't agree on a good option so we'll just fragment.. bluesky might not be perfect but it should at least allow most of us to stay together and independent.
At least till we can find a common forum. I think I'll send out my email via PM to a few members today just incase it shuts down today.

Someone setup a channel for us already, but I can't remember who.
I missed the initial blue sky post but just added myself. We mainly just need some place to get the message out about where we wind up going.

Discord channel sounds like a great idea as a quick "bomb shelter" in case the forum gets nuked. However if people prefer the Bluesky route then so be it, one way or the other some people will have to make new accounts on a new platform.
Either one of them would be just intermediary solutions though, neither offer access to information the same way a forum does.
