No I think he was naturally skinny when he did Corleone and Travis Bickle. He was also skinny for Goodfellas and Casino but after that I think he got naturally fatter. He was a little heavier in CopLand and much heavier in 15 Minutes.
He also seemed a little chunky in Backdraft.

De Niro really mastered the art of gaining/losing weight. It's an admirable ability to know how to do that at the flip of a switch.

Seems like the best way nowadays to get an Oscar/Oscar nom. is to pull this off for a project like McConaughey, Leto and Bale.
