oh and with this situation:
if the cops knocked on the door and didn't have a warrant, and someone let them in, that someone is an idiot. Cops can use their authority to coerce themselves inside pretty easily, but have no room to fight someone who makes use of their complete rights. Private property, cops can enter with permission or warrant.
If that can see into the house (windows) and see illegal activity, they don't need permission to enter. If illegal activity (underage drinking) is happening on the porch, they can enter the porch, but inside the house still requires permission or a warrant.
With that large of a police gathering though, as stated in the OP (yes I realize this is a few years old, just giving people stuff to know), it's likely they indeed did have some kind of policy on their side to gain entrance into the premises. I don't know all the specific little details about what they can do otherwise, because don't warrants require a little time to obtain?
