So last night I learned that it's possible to be 21 and still get ticketed for drinking in a private home

yep, not like you taunted them or anything.

Yup. And this:

I went up to one of the cops and said "Here's my ID, I'm 21, lemme go".

It's certainly not ground for a ticket, but I'll gladly sit down and shut up if it improves my chances of not getting one

If it's worth your while, fight it. If you want to win, hire a locally connected lawyer, this increases your chances of winning 100%, and has little to do with any abstract idea of "justice".

The law? First, the law is what the cop on the scene says it is, then the law is what the JofP says it is. Watch as your lawyer and the JofP address each other in court by their first names, and learn.

20 or 30 cops?

Welcome to dumbfsckville USA. What the hell... that many cops at a PARTY?

What the F were you doing at the party to attract that many cops?

Any way you slice it, this whole thing is dumb and everyone involved is dumb simply by association.

The cops probably wrote tickets for stupid stuff because they had to come and break up your party and they were hoping for a drug bust or something cool and it didn't happen. How much is the ticket? If it's only like a $50 just pay it and be done. If it's more and you have the option to go to court then the judge or the DA would probably knock it down to the minimum just for you showing up and putting forth a little effort.

Don't be a dick to the police. Just because you're legal to drink doesn't mean you're supposed to drink.

how is rolling eyes at BS considered taunting?

are you stupid?

If you would have done that where I grew up, they would have beat your a$$ and said you assaulted one of them - then you'd be facing more than a ticket.

That's pretty crazy that the cops didn't give any kind of warning if was just loud... Was it out of hand and bleeding into the adjacent yards?

Normally, a couple cops will show up, tell everyone who doesn't live there to leave, and then take off.

This time, at least 20-30 cops showed up.

They blocked the front and back door and wouldn't let anyone leave.

I went up to one of the cops and said "Here's my ID, I'm 21, lemme go". She replied "I'll let you know when I'm ready to check your ID". I rolled my eyes and walked back into the house. When they finally got around to checking my license, and confirmed that I was 21, they realized they couldn't write me a ticket for drinking. So, instead, they cite me for "Noisy Assembly" and send me away.

It's particularly amusing when there's a bar right across the street blasting music, but they seem uninterested in writing tickets for anyone there. Hmm...

Here's what I'd like to know:
1. Was it legal for them to not allow me to leave the house?
2. What's the best way to fight this thing?

They'll have to have hard evidence that you were causing the noise.

Just kidding..all the cop has to do is say you were loud and he wins.

Don't listen to people that hate America.

Was it "peaceful assembly"?

Were you guys hanging someone and the Bar across the street wasn't?

Why did you continue typing past this first line? Did you not want him to heed your advice, or were you just typing for your own benefit? ;)

Normally? So this has happened before? Maybe take a hint and stop with the damn noise?

You should have withheld your ID so the cops gave you a ticket for underage drinking instead. Then you could have showed up in court and showed them your ID.

Do you honestly feel that he should have to do that here?

Should he have to? No.

Would he have to? Yes.

Face it, law enforcement is a for-profit business nowadays. It's another form of taxation. Money rules the justice system. If you're in a lot of trouble with the law, you can legally pay off the system (by offering to pay heavy fines to the prosecuting government)

Thank you for admitting to it.

That's is Un-American and should not be tolerated.

Those that support this hate America.

No. But I had a friend who ran from the cops and when they caught him, they hand cuffed him in the back of a van and beat his legs with their batons for running.

Philly has always had a history of Police brutality and crooked cops.

So there is some equality between running from the cops and rolling your eyes?
