July 22nd is coming fast, and I am not sure on what's supposed to happen, I often read there would be a considerable price drop on a couple Core 2 Duo models, but is Intel also releasing the "Penryn" models the same day or something else but still newer than Core 2 Duo's ? I'm sorry I haven't followed the CPU scene for a while.

Intel is dropping prices. The new 1333MHz FSB chips will also be available, they are the same as the Core 2's we have at the moment, just with a faster FSB. There are also some new processors (like a new Extreme Edition quad core proc, speed increase + 1333MHz FSB)

Penryn will come toward the end of 2007 and early 2008. Those will be the last socket 775 processors, after that Intel is supposed to migrate to an onboard memory controller similar to AMD. For now, on July 22, like Lonyo said just FSB increases and a few new models, and of course price cuts.

So will prices drop immediately or will it take some time for the price drops to be reflected at retailers?

I don't think we'll see the price cuts take effect till Monday July 23rd, sine the 22nd of July is a Sunday.

I think Monday the 23rd you should be able to log into Newegg or wherever and the prices shut be cut on the Q6600 and whatever else.

I hope Newegg gets the E6750's and E6850's in, I plan on buying a e6750 and OC it hard core!

Most etailers probably wont update their prices until Monday, July 23. From there its a matter of supply and demand. The chips already out are more than likely to have plenty of supply so prices will drop pretty quick. Newer chips may not drop as fast due to supply but thats an unknown factor since we dont know the supply situation but I'm guessing Intel wont have much trouble in that respect. It'll also depend on how much forethought etailers put into ordering and preordering the chips for the price changes.

As a matter of fact, Newegg actually cut their prices on April 21, for the April 22 price cuts, so you just have to keep your eye on it.

Also, for me the E6750 might end up being my option. Hardcore OCing baby!!!
