Man, I love this game. Put in 4 hours building up my English regime, but found out I'm stuck on a small island.

I need some damn boats!

They are hidden until you get the technology to reveal them on the map.

The best two Civ3 sites out there [imho] are:

Civfanatics
and
Apolyton

You'll find lots of FAQ's and strategies at these places, and they have lively forums, where I'm sure you can get better answers.

[I still play civ3 too, but I also still suck at the game (I only play at monarch level)]

oh man I remember when I was so into Civ 3, where I would lose hours of my life without even blinking. Over the summer, once classes are over, I'm going to pick up Sim City 4, and find Civ3 around the house and get back into PC Gaming. Oh man, I can't wait. Only a few more weeks.

Is Civ3 like Rise of Nations?

worse graphics and less tactical stuff
and it's turn based
Thanks, I think I'll stay with Rise of Nations.

You have to give Civ a chance -- rise of nations is modeled after Civ. The Civ series is the grandaddy of all strategic scale strategy games.

Civ3 is much much more intricate than I understand Rise of Nations to be.

yeah it's a good game. different from your typical strategy games. it's about diplomacy, civilization building etc. you can win the game without fighitng at all. of course you can win by warring but it's gonna be different from your typical rts. imo rts is more fun if you ar elooking for combat

modern armor, and settler establish as many cities as possible. usually 4 pairs with a transport... build airports asap, expand asap. your army gets there in no time. assuming you have motored vehicles.

civ3 and ptw were the last games i bought. and i play games that i bought.

Rise of Nations is pretty hard. I gave it only an hour last night and got a headache. gotta find more time to play through it.

nothing has ever been able to take the place of civ 1, IMHO. Sid Meier is a genious. I think i played every one of his games back in the day. Railroad tycoon, Colonization, Silent Service, Pirates! Gold... ahh... memories

Pah. Civ is way too samey. Good for the first dozen hrs, but after that it all too often degenerates into "conquer mode."
