So, I've just installed AIM (via Trillian)...

Well, joining a chatroom gives me tons of spam messages involving webcam girls and furry animals, just turning on the client makes a ~15-16 y.o. girl IM me radom psychobabble every once in a while.
Most users have nicknames consisting of ranom letters and numbers like AW259fgh95g or asdgj2uftzv65hb. Communicating with them seems impossible, since they speak some extraterrestrial mutation of AOLspeek, which is even below the OMGHI2U level.
I don't see how typing 'I is wet lolzorz 15F/M' in flashing letters every five seconds would make someone a desirable chat partner.

Is there a trick to using AIM I don't get?

I had always thought that AIM was a messenger/chat program, not a failed cornucopia of promises of cheap profane entertainment. I guess I was wrong.

cor·nu·co·pi·a
n.

1. A goat's horn overflowing with fruit, flowers, and grain, signifying prosperity. Also called horn of plenty.
2. Greek Mythology. The horn of the goat that suckled Zeus, which broke off and became filled with fruit. In folklore, it became full of whatever its owner desired.
3. A cone-shaped ornament or receptacle.
4. An overflowing store; an abundance: a cornucopia of employment opportunities.

Uh, AIM is (A)OL (I)nstant (M)essenger. It has nothing to do with chat rooms.

But the people who randomly IM me are at the same intellectual level as their friends in the chatrooms. Since I talk to my friends via MSN, I've decided that I will look into the 'rich features' (as advertised) of AIM. I see no reason to use it instead of another IM program.
