after being hired after a 2-3 day process for a very nice job where they needed me to come in and replace someone RIGHT away... i've worked for a month and now they've all of a sudden made the decision to now replace me with someone internally. rather than having me here as a contractor.

seriously... wtf?!?

why go to all the effort to get a contractor into a job so fast for what was supposed to be a 6 month contract only to turn around and bring someone to the job internally?

IT jobs are still what i want to do but jesus... i don't think i'll EVER do a contract job again.

Wait, I don't understand, did you sign a contract to perform the work for them? They can't just cancel it and not pay you...

yeah... and i live in iowa.. which is an "at will" employment state.

basically any employer in the state can fire you at will with little to no reason.

part of it is that i let my supervisor know i'd had an interview a week or 2 ago for another job i applied for many months ago... but it wasn't a 100% sure deal and i probably won't hear anything about it for another week or 2.

so until then (maybe) i'm stuck without any income.

and i even offered to give them 2 weeks or more notice.

bah.

depending on the state, the company can fire or terminate at will. however, since you did get the job for what you thought was a longer period of time than 1 month, i would venture to guess you stopped looking for any other jobs. you relied on the employment contract to your detriment, and you could sue them based on promissory estoppel.

i swear i had to answer practice hypos more or less just like yours so many times last year in my 1st year contracts class in law school..just brought back flashbacks...

contracting rocks. you just gotta find a good company. of course you can be replaced, just get another job.

ex: clients call me in the weekend for 15min BS work, i bill 'em an hour (minimum charge). w00t!

So you were still looking for other jobs after agreeing to work for six months? Sounds like they needed to replace you since you weren't really planning to stay unless you had to.

You broke the agreement with your current employer first by interviewing to take a job in 2 weeks instead of 5 months, so no sympathy from me.

Nice move. Who the hell tells their boss they're interviewing with other companies?
