So it's time for a new phone...

T

Tim

My iPhone 4 has had a lovely cracked screen for a few months now, and I'm finally out of contract with AT&T wireless. I'm looking to save some money by going with Verizon (12% monthly discount through my employer).

Here's where I'd like some guidance. I liked the iPhone a lot, but I'm feeling the need to try something different. What's the best alternative right now?

Razr Maxx, Galaxy Nexus, HTC Rezound, or iPhone 4S. Basically the best Verizon has to offer.

Go into the store and put hands on all of these. No one here can tell you which of these is best for you, they all have their pro's and con's.

Take your cracked screen iphone4 and get it repaired (assuming you can't do yourself). Wait until iphone5 comes out, judge best phone then. Sell old iphone4... profit.

Get the Razr Maxx. It's a completely peerless phone right now.

<- Galaxy Nexus owner.

I'm an avid apple fan, I would stick with the iPhone personally. But you seem to want to try something different so I would do like the others have said and go to the store. You should personally go in and check the pros and cons of each and which suits you best.

If you want to "try" something different, buy a phone off of craigslist. It'll be far cheaper than signing up for a new contract on Verizon with phones that will pale in comparison to what's released at the end of the year.

Despite Windows Phone and Android being attractive on my initial uses of them, I've always switched back to iOS for one reason or another after 2 weeks or so. You should be able to find cheap phones like the Focus Flash or Samsung Captivate to try out for extended periods of time (a month or more). That way you aren't tied up in a contract for 2 years with a phone you don't want.

These aren't really very good phones to test Android with; not anymore. ICS is a completely different animal from old versions of Android, and the performance on these newer phones has finally gotten "there," imo.

The Focus Flash especially (it's a Windows Phone ;) ).

I played with the GNex, Rezound, RAZR at the store and wasn't too impressed, still lags and hesitations, those "did it register the finger press or not" moments. This crappy Trophy I have which is more less Nexus One/Droid Incredible level hardware is much more fluid. And if he is coming from an iPhone he will probably toss an Android phone into traffic within a month.

Force close? Wait?

Now is probably the worse time to buy a phone (Android or iOS), with Sony Xperia S (just came out), HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5 and Lumia 900 in the near future, I would say get it repaired and wait it out if you still feel the need to switch when those come out.

I've had more app crashes with iOS than Android, I think people just don't realize that there is a appcrash in iOS because it simply shuts the app down, and doesn't give you a prompt of 'Force Close or Wait'

My iphone4 crashes 10 times more than my sgs2 and my droid razr. Just because ios doesnt say its a crash doesnt mean its not a crash. Ios just closes shit but never say why or offer you to wait.

You can always tell the idiots who know absolutely nothing about the actual phones and just spout off fanboi crap. Give it a break, you have no real experience with the phones.

Hahah! That's a good one. Call me an idiot, therefore discrediting me and making you the winner! Brilliant! :awe:

I've used one Windows Phone (well, two after the first one died physically). I've never used the iPhone for any real length of time, and was pounding my head off the wall at the Verizon store with it either silently closing or not allowing me to do something (had to do with the photo gallery or the camera roll, not sure if different, was crashing, or user error) but damn it was smooth at doing so. :sneaky:

I've owned 3 different Android phones, still have my Droid around the house enjoying a decadent retirement as an alarm clock. Used a couple more for several days. The most recent crop, well the only "real" (where is the cutoff for that exactly? Hmm? you seem to be the arbiter of that) experience is around 20 minutes each in the store with them a month or so back. Considering what I was looking for and what they were offering, I feel I am damn well entitled to give my opinion. The OP is free to disregard it as he pleases.

Anyways, you can label me a fanboi as you wish (ahh yes, the notorious Windows Phone AND iPhone fanboi). Tell me, what is your experience with all of these phones? Obviously you must own all of them and use them, probably simultaneously.

On the bright side, I have NO problems with any apps on WP closing, whether silently or forcefully. Oh wait, that must be a fanboi statement if it doesn't agree with your vision of the world. My sincerest apologies....

20 mintues in a Verizon store with a demo phone.... Enough said.

I've never used the Rezound enough to say I'm an expert on it. I used it for awhile at the store but ended up getting the Galaxy Nexus. Wife owned a Razr for awhile but ended up moving to the Galaxy Nexus. So we own two Galaxy Nexus right now. ICS was the primary reason for the move and the fact that it's not locked down like the Moto.

I have NONE of the issues you're talking about. I almost never have force closes or lag. Making a blanket statement that you'll throw your phone in the street is silly.

I've had a Rezound for a while now. It's a much better phone with ICS, even with Sense. I tried to not root but the stock Gingerbread install was pretty painful. From what I've read ICS should be coming pretty soon, a new leaked build just appeared in the past week.

I love the form factor of my Droid Incredible 1. Currently running CM7. It's similar to the iPhone, size wise, with my Speck case on. I suggest you wait until the Incredible 4G comes out in about a month, if you can, and give it a shot.
