So its the motherboard afterall?

Well, I got my new Kingston Hyper X 3200 today from UPS. I had previously RMA'd it because it failed memory tests, wouldn't load windows, and got many read errors in my new computer (IC7/9700 Pro/2.4C) when my generic 512 stick didn't.

So, I put in the new sticks and get the same errors. "Somebody shoot me" I think to myself. Well, I thought I'd try the RAM in my dad's computer (which wasn't built when I RMA's the old sticks).. and well, it works perfectly. I had been having performance issues if you had noticed in my last posts- perhaps the motherboard was at fault the entire time?

Is there any chance its not the motherboard now? I'm going to try RMA that I guess..

Also.. I flashed the BIOS to 1.4 and also upped the voltage for about 5 minutes by 1 notch. Doesn't that void the warranty? I hope they don't notice.. ug.

May be, maybe not. Apparently Kingston has been having compatibility issues with HyperX and some boards (notably some Asus A7N8X though I am ruinning it just fine in mine). Have you tried running Memtest on it? Tried reducing the timings a bit to see if that helps? Upping the voltage would probably make things worse not better...
 
Set your memory timings to 2.5-3-3-8 with 2.7 volts and see if the problems evaporate.

Yes. I get 0 errors with generic sticks on the board and 10,000 in 5 minutes with the Hyper X sticks.

Alright.. if it works though, then what? I didn't pay this mutch to run it at generic speeds.
 
If it works, you've lost 2% of your system performance but are free to overclock your HyperX like a madman and regain way more than that 🙂 Corsair, for example, is actually starting to reprogram the SPDs on their XMS-series modules to run at slightly more-relaxed timings because of this, from what I understand.

Heh.. then I think I've never had the concept of what the RAM speeds meant. So, RAMs like Hyper X and XMS, running at the same 2.5/7/3/3 stuff, will go to a higher FSB normally than cheaper RAM? I thought those numbers were important, rather than a 2% thing. I'm confused.. (Which isn't that unusual, actually.)

Straitjacket? They tried that once. Thought it would hold me, hah... When I got out, I killed them all. Each and everyone one...
 
Check THUGSROOK's thread here and look at the difference in the 3DMark2001SE scores between the tight timings and the relaxed ones. 2% difference at a given speed. Now look up at how much further he can overclock when he goes with the relaxed timings. Major improvement in OC'ing. Granted, that's with Corsair XMS, but I think you see the general idea... give a little on the timings and then get it all back on the OC, plus interest.
