So it's -8 here, and school is closed for a 2nd straight day

Not really any snowfall, just ungodly cold temperatures. Anyone else getting some extremely cold weather? BTW, I'm in the Lansing, MI area.

Yes, no snowfall but it is 0F here. Wind chill is -5F 🙁

I didn't even have to scrape my windshield since there is no snowfall for the past week or so.

It's about 10F here with wind at 7 mph... Michigan also, Upper Peninsula. School was closed yesterday and today. What a crock. Work should be closed too.

I can't believe they'd cancel school over the cold. You'd think you'd be used to that in Michigan, is it really that much colder than usual this time of year?

In Maine it's been below zero at night and early morning for weeks now, we're feeling the same arctic blast you are. But this is generally the coldest part of winter for us anyway. It was -20F a couple days ago, plus a nice brisk 30mph wind. That'll wake ya up in the morning....

Mn they never cancelled school when I was a kid. You're lucky. Play some video games or something, stat.

edit: cold weather? yep - I'm right across the border about 70km east and 40 km south. you know it's cold when the river appears frozen over.

Brrrr.

I miss snow days/cold days.

They closed the office in 2004 when we had bad storms here in FL.

There's a picture on the front page of the paper here showing a kid out playing on some ice. The article is about how they can't go to school because it's too cold.

LOL

I'm in michigan as , port huron area. All the schools in our area are closed as well being due to it to cold out. I remember when I went to school, they never cancel school to being cold out. I just graduated highschool almost 5 years ago. What is today society coming to? The pussuication of america continues.

Yeah they used to cancel school if it was frigid cold out when I was in school. Not everyone rides the bus (or can), not having kids walk in the freezing weather is the reason they close the schools.

Oh please, this isn't some new thing. I remember growing up they'd cancel school because of the cold weather and I've been out of high school 15 years. The reason (at least where I grew up) that school would be cancelled because of cold was there were students that walked to school since they lived close enough that they weren't on the bus routes.

Exactly.

And this is why today's school system is degrading. This happens all over the United States. Schools will use any excuse to shut down school and send the students home.
Here in Maryland, it seems like on average, at least one day a week my nephew is off from school, and that is not counting holidays.

If it gets too hot.. they let school out.. teachers have a conference.. school is out..
Oh $hit.. Wind advisery.. better let the kids out at noon..

In the Chicago suburbs temps are the same -18 windchill and the kids were waiting at the bus stop as usual.

I was one of the kids that walked to school and I specifically remember never getting a day off school for cold. They just let us in the building earlier than normal so we wouldn't freeze. I'm in the middle of Michigan.

If you haven't realized, they aren't afraid of anyone getting frostbite. They're afraid of getting sued when it happens.

They never cancelled school on me because of the cold either ... put it this way, there is a river that is approximately 400 yards across in front of my house, and that puppy has been frozen over since the end of December. The coldest it has been here so far this year? -45F. Yay me.

Just a word....while it's debatable about closing school...and my university has school today while roughly 400 school districts/community colleges dont have school in my area, all that is fine.

Whats dangerous is the weather. Yea we can all be so quick to criticize but do you really want your child walking to school or waiting for a bus when in most of these areas with the wind chill factored in, frostbite will set in on exposed skin within a matter of minutes. And this is in areas where it's rare to get this cold(Michigan, Eastern Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana etc) I work in an ER I know...I've seen it the last few nights with the homeless that cant find some sort of heated shelter. One guy came in with his core temp at 91F...he's lucky he was found otherwise he would have been dead in another hour. This cold is dangerous and the schools wont risk the liability of some kid getting hospitalized because mommy and daddy were retarded and didn't dress him properly for the weather conditions

It is a balmy 0 here at the lakefront, though walk around the wrong corner and you can run into some really nasty windchill.
