Went to vegas w/my homies this past weekend for my birthday -- won lots of money this time. :)

had a freaking great time!

but Sun morning Washington Mutual Fraud calls me -- and asks me about some charges that were made to my card -- apparently someone ordered about $800 worth of computer crap using my credit card!

WTF!!!

The only two internet websites I ordered from lately is :
svc.com
jab-tech.com

Man this sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*UPDATE*
So i went to Washington Mutual to get the paperwork filled out for the fraud thing.

Then I deposited a large amount of money to cover some checks I had written out before all of this.

Tonight, I am checking my account, and I have $2077.29 in unknown charges again!!! My balance shows that I have that much missing, but Washington Mutual is updating their database, so I won't konw what the actual charges are until 6am PST.

AGH!!!

I'm freaking freaked out that I won't get my $$ back!! :( :( :(

Can anyone help or tell me from experience how things will go???
AGH!!A??!

update 2
Alright, let me do my best to address all the questions.

THe card is a Washington Mutual Visa Check/Debit card.

As soon as I found out about the charges, I went the bank and closed the credit card attached to the account. I had written a bunch of checks the previous week to pay for bills, and I told the teller this information. She stated that the card was cancelled, so it could not be used. However, the checks that I wrote would be fine to clear w/o problems. She assured me that nothing but my checks would clear -- the account was frozen.

Anyway, I checked my account this morning online, and I freaked out over nothing -- the bulk of the checks I wrote were the ones posted on my account and cleared, and only a few of the same fraud charges showed up. Here are the transaction details:

11/15/2004 DIRECTDEBIT/VISA-VTL SCE 18776471300 $46.90

11/15/2004 DIRECTDEBIT/VISA-1ST CLASS SOFTWAREMISSISSAUGA ON $59.19

to alisolm
1. the card was cancelled right away
2. I wrote checks w/o more than enough $$ to cover them before the fraud.
3. I had no choice -- i did not want to bounce 10 checks. Plus the teller assured me that it would be fine.
4. I was hanging out w/my friends all weekend - i was still in the "homies" mood. :) SORRY! :)

Sucks about the card, really weird what the stealer bought. I went to that drregsoft.com and it looked like some spam crap website. I would possibly change your card number because this could lead to more problems later down the road. On a side note my bday was on the 14th too lol. Just went out with the family and some friends for dinner. Deffinitely not as fun as Vegas : )

1) Please re-confirm it's a credit card (not debit/check card), right?

2) VISA or MasterCard?

According to WAMU they are a thrift and savings bank not a commercial bank (Like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, CitiBank, etc.) so they don't offer traditional credit cards.

I don't see credit cards, do you?

I think he means a checkcard that can be accesse via the Mastercard network. I think those cards do not insure any amount that is considered stolen. If they do, it is a small amount.

Sounds like he's talking about a visa check card.
Otherwise I don't know why he would be talking about his bank account balance with unauthorized charges showing up.

Visa's liability policy
Not sure if this includes check cards but the description matches what I'm familiar with for visa signature based claims.

You:
1. didn't cancel the card after finding out that someone was charging on it
2. wrote checks without any money in the account to cover them
3. deposited "a large amount of money" in an account connected to a card being used fraudulently without severing the connection.
4. said "homies"

I hope you get your money back and that, please, please, you learned something from this.

If you haven't cancelled the card yet, now's the time.
Although at most banks if there's fraud they'll automatically freeze/stop and then cancel the card. Wonder why they didn't at Wamu.

Doesn't VISA have a policy that you are liable only up to $50 if your card is stolen?

It's not a Visa policy, it's the Federal law. AFAIK it applies to check cards (debit) as well as long as they have Master Card or Visa logos.

I only use my debit card at the grocery store/Walmart/Target where you have to enter a PIN.

Otherwise it's always a credit card, plus the rewards are nice :)
