So...is nVidia planning to release anything in the $180s price range?

GTX460s aren't even going for $170 now a days, i've seen them as low as $95-$120.

1GB ones aren't that cheap.
And how will AMD dominate the $180 price point if the faster 1GB GTX460's are less than $180?

So is AMD going to lower the price on the 6850/6870? Otherwise NVIDIA is going to make (actually probably already is making) a killing on the GTX 460s.

Why would they? The cards offer better performance at MSRP.

They will release something (gts550?) faster then a 6850 but slower than the 6870 and price it as such. Released before the end of January.

GTX 460/560 = 331/367mm^2
HD 6850/70 = 255mm^2

Nvidia doesn't want a price war in that range. AMD can sell 6850s at $100 if they have to (same die size as 4850 and they did there) and there's no way Nvidia can make money if they introduce a GTS 550 then drop it down to that level.

Both companies are probably happy with the status quo margins wise, AMD more so obviously.

GTS550 will be based on GF116 (240nm) and probably a 192-bit memory

NV could introduce two GF114 cards (GTX560 and GTX565) at $199 and $240

How do you reason the 550 will be 240mm^2?

Even 6850 with mild OC is beating/matching 460 ftw in some benchmarks.

nah man... when both are oc'd to their likey max, the 460 owns the 6850. I know this. Asus EAH6850 @ 950 Mhz verus Palit Sonic 460 @ 850. Palit wins in most games at 1920x1200, and smokes the Asus in 3DMarks.

I have both of these cards tested in the same systems, so i'm certain of my words.

GF106 (GTS450) is ~240nm, i expect GF116 to be the same size.

GTS550 will not compete against HD6800 but will be between HD5700 and HD6800

GF114 (GTX560) will compete with HD6800 series

The gtx560 will be faster then the 6870. It should sell well if the price is right.

Next up will be the gtx560se/gts555 or whatever they call i,t which will be a cut down gtx560 or a gtx460 remake with higher clocks. Faster then the 6850 but only slightly slower then the 6870.

As has been pointed out numerous times. Die size wont make or break a company. We have been hearing this argument for years and yet Nvidia continues to churn out good margins and profits with a bigger die size.

Don't you think they would try and make it a bit smaller.

GTX460 1GB> 6850
GTX 470> 6870
GTX570 > 6970
GTX580 > All

NVIDIA pretty much has it covered.

Actually no, i expect an AMD HD6770 at ~190mm (half HD6900) to replace the HD5700 and GTS550 (GF116 ~240mm) to compete at the same price performance.

GTX560 could be 5-10% faster than 6870 (384 Shaders @820MHz) and if yields are the same or better than GF104 then NV could make an aggressive pricing a la GTX460, two parts at $199 and $229.
