So a little while ago I found out that I had something that looked like a RAM problem. I couldn't install without errors. I even had errors when trying to install both Windows XP and 2000. My games were crashing to the desktop and sometimes locking up, and every once in a while my computer would have a spontaneous restart (which was rare). So I did a memory test (with memtest86) and it told me that I had over 37000 errors on my stick of RAM. So I ended up buying a new stick of RAM and my old stick is being RMA'd. When I got the new stick, Windows, BF1942, and Command and Conquer Generals installed without a hitch. The problem now is that I called up the company who has my old stick right now and they said they ran a test and it looked like the RAM is fine. So I sent them memtest86 in an e-mail and they are going to try that, but judging by how my computer is performing with the new stick of RAM I got, this looks like the company may be right when they say that my actual RAM stick is fine. When I play Command and Conquer Generals, my system still locks up after long periods of play. The lockups usually occur after my computer has been on for a long time, or I have been playing for a long time. However, I don't think the problem is case temps. because my system case temp. never goes above 35 degrees celsius, and my CPU temp. rarely goes above 45 degrees. Here are my specs...
Giga-byte 7VRXP (which was RMA'd a long time ago)
Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200 (which was RMA'd about a month ago and works now)
Kingston PC2700 512MB RAM (my other stick is Samsung PC2700)
Sound Blaster Audigy
2 Maxtor 40Gb
All drivers and patches are fully updated. I also get an "I/O error occurred, the installation is corrupt" error when I try to reinstall Counter-Strike. I have re-downloaded the installer because of this and I still get that error. This was also an error that occurred with my old stick of RAM.
I'm going to wait until I get my old stick back to see how my computer reacts to having 1GB of RAM. But if things still don't work like they are supposed to, could my motherboard be screwed? I also switched DIMM slots to see if I had a faulty DIMM slot, but that didn't help. I'm so tired of RMA's and defective hardware that the last thing I need to hear is that my motherboard is screwed up, AGAIN, but I'm anxiously awaiting the day that my computer runs without errors, or crashes. Thanks for the help.
