So is it worth going Conroe with Kentsfield coming out supposedly Jan of 07?

I'm debating this one myself. I've had my 4400+ since it first came out almost precisely one year ago this month. I believe my system was up and running July 25th of 05. As nice a setup I have I admit to being a bit bored and looking for new thrills...

But I also want to be at least somewhat practical... I'll probably almost certainly go conroe but what are the rest of you guys thinking on this issue?

I'm thinking kentsfield may just be an EE part first off Q1 '07. Therefore, it will probably be EE pricing at $1k or possibly more.

I'm a sucker for new technology.

I will be getting an E6600 on release day, and a Kentsfield asap.

Quad core may be extraordinarely difficult to utilize for most users at the time Kentsfield launches, so Conroe seems like a safe bet.

Kentsfield is supposed to be an EE exclusive type chip. Mainstream and affordable quad cores will come later.

Not if it has reverse HT. ;)

Existing engineering samples of Kentsfield in the wild apparently do not have working implementations of mitosis (Intel's speculative threading tech).

Honestly, for at least the next year I'd say a Conroe E6600 or E6700 would do ya just fine. Overclock it, and it may be considered fast for even longer.

I'd wait until mid-2007 before considering a Kentsfield, not many applications and very few games are optimized for even two cores, let alone four. An E6700 compares with an FX-62 in all (even un-Intel supervised) benchmarks I've seen so far, and I think anyone would agree that if you had the speed of an FX-62 you'd be cool for quite a while.

I'm still deciding between an E6600 and a E6700, and I'll probably wait til about September or October. When it seems as if my CPU bottlenecks my system, then I'd consider upgrading to Kentsfield, even if it's 2008 by then.
