there is no scientific research to show that synthetic sweetners (like splenda, nutrasweet, saccharine) are harmful to humans. (there was some that showed increase rates of cancer in rats or something, hence the warning label on some gums and stuff). Our body can't digest the sweetners so they aren't considered calories, thats why diet drinks are so low in calories. The problem with diet drinks is the acidity of the drink, the pH is pretty low aids in eroding your teeth. Combing that with the LOADS of simple sugars in regular coke and you will quickly realize how dentists have such a stable profession. If you can stand the taste, go diet.

If you must drink soda, you're better off drinking regular than diet.

Aspartame and Splenda are harmless in and of themselves.

However, the acids in soda are terrible for your tooth enamel and caffeine is just plain bad for you, not to mention addicting.

Stay away from soda all together except for a very occasional treat.

Drink water as your daily drink.

Your body will thank you.

Damn Skippy. If I hear something that sounds like FUD, I research it until I can find valid evidence, or a lack thereof. :p

It's bad for your bones.

"The active ingredient in most soda pop is phosphoric acid. The pH of most soda pop is 2.8, which is very acidic. As we discuss in detail in the body PH page, you want your diet to ALKALIZE your body, and ingesting a highly acidic drink like soda pop does the opposite and is very detrimental to your health. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis."

Highly disputed and based on a non-repeated study.
