So is anyone actually going to buy an HD-DVD player this coming Tuesday?

Well it looks like HD-DVD is finally launching come Tuesday (04/18/06). There's supposed to be 2 Toshiba HD-DVD players available for $499 and $799. Only 3 movies I'm aware of are going to be released the first week though - "The Last Samura", Million Dollar Baby", and "The Phantom of the Opera".

Think I'm going to wait awhile until there are more movies available (as well as to see how the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray fiasco goes). You would think they would try to release some bigger name movies in high-def to draw some attention...none of the movies being released really intrigue me so far.

no.
big waste of money for me, and, in my eyes, in general. i don't have a HDTV and i think the current DVD format is fine.

Exactly. I don't want to shell out that kind of cash only to see the format die a year later.

No, not right now. Have the HDTV, but will wait for NetFlix or BB to carry HD-DVD rentals before I drop the cash on a HD-DVD player. Or maybe I'll just wait till the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war to settle 1st.

I'll wait until the release of HD-DVD Decrypter, HD-DVD Shrink, and an HD-DVD Burner with discs selling at less than $1 each.

No, ill just wait til the playstation 3 comes out with a blu ray player.

I want the PS3 for the games. The BR is a bonus that I will rarely use, and only for the films that I really like.

yeah but with the blue ray player theres no need to drop another $500 for a stand alone player.

there isnt a single stand alone blueray player for under 1k.... hd-dvd is the only "hdtv dvd" format with a player below $500.

Yep, it's the Pioneers that end up with arrows in their backs.

ill end up getting blu-ray because i feel as if that will be the better format (ps3, more major companies backing it up).

i saw "hd-dvd" at my local frys last night on this huge 60" plasma. looked alright at best to be honest. and i know my lcds and plasmas...btw, is hd-dvd 1080p?

Not yet. I believe the 1st generation players will only be 720p or 1080i. The later generations will have 1080p support (from what I understand anyways). Just another reason to wait for the format(s) to mature.
