So I'm watching some JAZZ festival on PBS...

And I just don't get it.

First of all, how do you tell if some one SCREWS UP?

I just don't get the attraction to this music, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to any of it that I can ascertain. You can't really snap your fingers or clap your hands or stomp your feet to it cuz you never know where it's going next.

I've tried to like it, really I have but it leaves me stumped.

It's kinda like the abstract art of music....

it's like you are pointing to the asian man to the counter at 7-eleven and assumign that all asians are jsut like him.

There is crappy jazz and really good jazz. For the msot part, msot of it is crap.

That said, when you fianlly discover a gem, liek something by miles davis or David Brubeck or Thelonious monk or wahtever, then, and only then will you understand the beauty that jazz can be.

three out of my four favorite pieces, of all that I have played (violinist and saxophonist) and all that I have listened too, classical included, are jazz.

Yeah I'm with you there, bro.

Music should be predictable. I hate suprises; they confuse and anger me.

"'ll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, it doesn't get any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman". "

I agree with Goosemaster - when you hear a really great peice of jazz you know why people find the music so powerful and beautiful. It really is a great genre (that I don't listen to enough of these days).

No jazz list is complete without Dizz or Bud

In all seriousness, Michael Bolton is a no-talent assclown.

I'm a fan of:
Medeski, Martin, and Wood
Mingus
Monk
Coltrane (Love Supreme is simply jaw-dropping)
Beefheart
Sun Ra

that Von Dutch we discussed earlier is making me want to dance.

I didn't want to post a conclusive list. I wanted to leave some fun for others. This is a good thread to maybe post some good jazz artists that some of us may have forgotten about. 🙂

i've only heard of a few of those.

Just watched Pat Matheny, and unlike most of the others I've listened to he doesn't sound like a orchestra warming up.

His music seems like it's GOING somewhere and when it's done, you feel it actually GOT there! 😉
