So I'm watching Futurama, I think I know why it didn't do that great on TV.

As pathetic as it sounds, the American public is too stupid to understand this show. They have jokes referencing various math and science topics, and things like the macintosh 1984 commercial and at least 2 different computer languages. I don't think the general public understands most of the best jokes in this show.

For a while it was really good, but then the simpsons started to suck. Being that it was the same writing team doing both shows, they had started spreading things too thin. Then the simpsons picked up again and rama started to suck. etc etc.

I was just thinking about this show today, and how awesome it was. But also, how some of the episodes were just sad.

For example, they just re-ran the episode where Time was fast fowarding, and they had no idea what happened during that time. And Fry did something to make Leela love him, but couldn't remember. At the very end, he found out that had moved the stars to say "I Love You Leela." But no-one saw it. And then they started playing the "Harlem Globetrotters" music. (You had to see the entire epsiode to understand it.) But I LOVE how they did this.

I can remember three other episodes that were just sad:
1) The episode where Fry is going to clone that stray dog that waited for him every day at the Pizza Parlor where he worked, after he dissapeared from time.
2) When Fry thought that his brother stole his name, and all of his "luck" to become really successful in life. In the end, you find out that it was his nephew who had his name, and his brother named the kid AFTER his brother.
3) When Leela finds out that her parents are really just freaks living in the sewer. It shows how during her life when she's growing up, all the little things they did for her without her knowing.

Dang, what a great show.

I never watched it at all when it was on it's normal run. But now I watch it on TBS all the time. I think it's funny most of the time. Same thing with Family Guy.

I can't believe people found the simpsons or family guy funny, but futurama was awesome.

I need Futurama DVDs. And I agree with the public being too dumb to understand. That's why The Simpsons and such suceeded for so long - they used low level humor to appeal to EVERYONE. Futurama required a more than cursory understanding of computers to get half the humor, and a long Internet career to get the rest of it.

I agree that futurama was too sophisticated. I think another strike against it was the show moved pretty fast. There wasn't lots of time for a joke to set in. (I personally thought this made teh show great, but it could help explain why people missed jokes in it)

I think another reason why it didn't do that great when it was on Fox was because they put it in a horrible timeslot. During football season, Futurama was always pre-empted so no one got to see it... which I hated because I love the show.
