So I'm watching episode 1x01 of Top Gear

They should get Tiff Needel to replace James May.

Anyone know when Jeremy and Tiff worked together, what show it was? I remember seeing a segment of both of them doing a piece on the XJ220. It was awesome.

it isn't even that many. and they have that fat guy telling people what they should buy

Yeah, that was the original Top Gear, some years before the new series started.
He now works on Fifth Gear, but I can't abide him- his presenting style is terrible and he thinks he's God.

Clarkson also acts like a deity among men, but at least he's humourus with it. Needell is just plain irritating.

Yeah, they got rid of him at the end of 1x. Wait, or did he last into 2x?

As was said, that was still Top Gear.
They changed the whole thing and IMO made it much better with the new style.

I think he lasted just one season..

What year is this from anyway?

August 2002.

Wow, for some reason I thought it was around for much longer..

Yep. As said, Top Gear was around (IIRC) in the very early 90's, but the new format show (which, IMHO, is a hell of a lot better without Quentin Wilson, Vicky Butler-Henderson and Tiff Needell) started in 2002.

i thought 5th gear was the old show and top gear sort of a spinoff

like in episode 1x01 clarkson is testing the car and says, 'but now i'm shifting out of fifth gear <gives camera a look> and into Top Gear"

Clarkson is awesome. His style is that of an arrogant Brit. Thats exactly what I want to see when he's beating the sh!t out of those cars!😀

Nope. Fifth Gear was always the "non-BBC-equivalent" and was never very good. Even to this day, with their track in west Wales, they still manage to suck, and quite hard too.

However, you'll notice these little jabs at Fifth Gear all the time, as 90% of the presenters started out on Top Gear.

Clarkson's fantastic - some people hate him, but I think he's a great presenter; exactly what the show needs.

Other motoring shows have wimpish, sitting-on-the-fence journalists, and that doesn't make for good viewing.

i watched 1x01 just a few days ago (archives rule!)- the show was quite annoying! like it felt so quiet and eerie, there was no audience interaction, and there were like 70 year old people in the audience. clarkson is still funny, but its not the same over-arrogant prick humor as it is now.
