So I'm Upgrading to Vista...

I finally bit the bullet. I've been talking shit about Vista for over a year now, yet truth be told I've never even used it. Of course, I was waiting for SP1 to drop, and I'm hoping that the DVD I get is already slipstreamed with the service pack (doubt it, because the crappy OS is sitting on store shelves for so long!)

My rig is an older 939-based Shuttle XPC, running an Opteron 165 at 2.2ghz. To prepare for Vista x64, I bought a new 500gb HD and 2GB of OCZ Platinum (the max amount my mainboard supports--only 2 dimm slots.) Obviously, I'm doing a clean install. I will have 64bit, signed drivers for all my hardware ready and waiting on a thumbdrive when I install. Anything else I need to do to prepare? Is there a common set of "first-time" tweaks that IT folks recommend you do after installing Windows? Like, how do I get rid of all the annoying security nag screens once and for all?

sp1 hasnt been released and i dont think it will be much improvement !!!!!!!!, remembering the folder views and constant Nagging that UAC brings on every mouse click put vista sp1 in an "Early Beta" stage from my view, i do thing that with sp2 there may be some great improvements but that will be a long way off.

if your are a patient person it will be intertaining, if not call your doctor for a perscription.

dont totally give up XP untill you have used vista though, install to another HD and donot activate fo atleast 30 days.

Wait...wtf? Even though SP1 is final, it hasn't been released? WHY NOT??? Why is it only available on TechNet and MSDN? When is release to the general public? Fuck it, I'm downloading the torrent...

Hmmm.

As for SP1, I heard there were some bugs with specific drivers.

Go ahead and download if you want but what's in SP1 that's so important you can't wait? Just for my own curiosity, why did you upgrade? You don't have to answer, I'm just curious because it sounds like you don't even like Vista.

One Vista basher finally comes clean. Who's next from the copy/paste brigade?

Don't. Intentionally turning off security is stupid.

SP1 cuts down the duplicates, but you should never just turn UAC off.

can UAC really be that great ?,

can UAC determine if you are online/offline [internet wise] ?

if you are the administrator in the administator account mode and have full rights do you still get the popups asking for permission to run a task ?

Hehe, well I don't like Vista based on everything I've read about it--not on blogs or forums, but on CNet, respected review sites, and business journals (or even from Microsoft themselves!)

I needed a new hard drive anyway, and I decided to make the new one my main drive. So it was either reinstall Windows Media Center (I don't usually ghost--I like the "cleanliness" of a fresh install now and then) or upgrade the OS. I was waiting for SP1 before trying it anyway, and thought that the version on TechNet was final build.

It is - it just hasn't been released to the general public via Windows Update yet.
