Get the tile man to redo it? It's not his fault don't do that. Get a new wife? Yes, this is solely her fault.
I'd notice it but I'm OCD like that, if I lived there I would hate it.

I don't like it but I prefer symmetry... Your wife made the wrong choice in hindsight. The tiles are most likely set by now, so correction would require new tiles and destructive removal. If your wife is gonna hate it, u gonna have to pay for new tile and installation.

Fwiw, my contractor laid out his intended Backsplash tile installation temporarily on the counter close to where it was going to go and waited for my approval of the total layout prior to fixing it to the wall. I'd have it no other way.

As with most in their younger days, building random things from lego blocks was always a favorite passtime. You would drag out the box, dump it on the floor and build whatever was on your mind from the last cartoon, movie, or television program you had seen. Sometimes you would have a friend over when they urge to build would strike. For some reason, these kids were always satisfied having those one or two random bricks in their creation that didn't match. Why does the grey space fighter have a single red brick on one side of the body? Once they left, smash and back in the box.

What does this have to do with your kitchen? Your house is fucked. Burn it down and start over.

It looks fine to me. I generally prefer symmetry, but with this specific application, I'm indifferent.

It really looks fine to me. The absolute, unwavering truth is that in a week or two you won't think about it much and a few months from now you won't even give it one iota of thought, not even the tiniest little squeeze of shit.I'd let it go. Ripping it all out including possible repairs to the wall after the tiles are yanked off is a hugely unnecessary thing to do.

Also, you should only make him redo it if you plan on paying him twice. It's not his fault you guys didn't communicate.

They look asymetrical because you have a small section. Imagine the whole wall of tiles and they will become symetrical again :awe:

I have those tiles in my bathroom....

I think it looks great. Once the grout is in etc it will look even better.

Besides, your wife ok'ed it, so it's a done deal. If you/she doesn't like it you will have to pay for double the labor/material.

I hate anything asymmetrical, so I would have him redo it . . . at your cost because your wife OK'd the initial install.

It looks horrendous. You'll need to demolish the entire kitchen to fix that.

Before you do anything, get rid of the "Bon Appetit" - plaque. Then I might be able to give you more in-depth advice :D

Edit: worse than any symmetry issue is the fact that he put an offset in, when going around the corner. That's not acceptable.

1) If I was a visitor I'd never notice it

I'd notice it right away. I wouldn't say anything if its someone else's house but definitely not something I would choose.

OP - find out how much they would charge to fix it and fix it if its not excessive

You really think the house is salvageable? I have my doubts...

She made the wrong choice. That's one reason women should never be given options. You need to spell things out for them.

Suck it up or pay to have it re-done. It's not the contractors fault. Though he is an idiot.

Honestly, it doesn't look bad. Yeah, it's not what I would have done but after seeing it I'm leaning toward just accepting it now.

And I'm not looking to place blame here. I know my wife approved it and I'm definitely annoyed that she went ahead and made this decision without consulting me first. I have expressed this to her so it's done... we move on.

Yes, the tile guy is an idiot. This kind of thing works best on a larger surface like a shower but I don't think it is going to bother me enough that I'm going to have him rip out the tile and redo it.

Wife...

Not sure how else you could do the corner. It is travertine so what other options are there for corners?

Looks fine. If you don't like it, you will need to pay to have it redone as your wife ok'd the work.

Small job like that, you should have just done it yourself in an afternoon.

No, the tile guy isn't an idiot. He proceed exactly as he should have by asking his client what she wanted. That the client chose poorly isn't his problem.

That wouldn't bother me at all. I don't see why it needs to be symmetrical.

Symmetrical relative to what? I mean, where is the dividing line where you would ideally be able to fold the pattern in half and have everything match? I guess you could have two dividing lines over the sink and the stove. Is that what you were thinking?

If I were you, I'd get on the phone and tell him to redo asap.

Oh, don't forget to pay him double, and thinking about having a serious conversation with the wife.

OK, I consulted with my wife. It's too busy. You should have went with plain tiles with symmetrical accent pieces.
There is also too much glass ware above the sink. She should put it away.
Nice cupboard, counter top, fridge and stove but this idea of having the microwave above the stove is a recipe for an accident.

So there you have it. Our completely unbiased opinion.
