So, I'm trying to decide if I can live with this... update, I can live with it.

Is this acceptable or is it complete shit?

  • Yes, it looks like shit and he should redo it.

  • No, it looks fine. Keep it.

I know this will probably end badly but here goes.

My wife and I are having a backsplash installed in our kitchen which we remodeled a few years ago. I was going to do it but it just never seemed to materialize so we decided to get some quotes and pay someone to do it.

Anyway, fast forward to today. We have decided on the tile, the look we want, the accent pieces etc and today is the day the installer comes to destroy our house.

My wife sends me a picture this afternoon and I immediately notice that the accent pieces are not lining up symmetrically. I send my wife an e-mail asking her WTF? She responds that the tile guy asked her if she wanted the accent pieces installed symmetrically or asymmetrically. She asked for his opinion and he said he prefers the asymmetrical layout so she went with that.

I was totally not expecting this and have never seen tile accents done in such a small space in this manner so I defer to the wisdom of ATOT.

EDIT-The small black squares are the accent pieces.

Does this look like shit and should we make him redo it?

It's done and it is what it is.

I am not sure what I should be looking for, but anything asymmetrical is going to annoy me. It just will, same as with odd numbers.

I have to be honest, at first I was like WTF!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

But we have stuff that that will sit on the counter and cover quite a bit of this up anyway so does it really matter?

I see now (the second picture didn't load for me originally). I would make him redo it. Yeah, he is going to hate you, but fuck him. Also, wtf is he using tape for?

I'm assuming you don't like how the tiles were laid (angled instead of straight). It looks fine to me.

No, he is talking about the small dark tiles that are not placed along a line. At least, I believe that is what he is saying.

I'm not sure what you mean by symmetry in this case (not in a line? symmetric around the sink as the Y axis?), but they seem to be placed almost randomly, not spaced evenly in... any way (or maybe that's what you mean), but yeah, not great.

Not really terrible either.

1) If I was a visitor I'd never notice it
2) If I had to live there every day I'd notice it and it would bother me.
3) Your wife approved of it that way, so deal with it. You have no legal or moral right to "make him redo it". The fuck-up was on your end, not on his.

That is where I am. I don't think they look bad, but I definitely would be bothered they weren't symmetrical.

That's the thing, I'm kind of warming up to it as it is. It's not how I would have done it but my wife ok'd it and it doesn't look bad. I'm kind of leaning toward just living with it.

Tomorrow he grouts it so whatever I decide I need to do it by tomorrow before noon.

It doesn't bother me at all.

However, you're living there, so if it bothers you, have it changed. It's not worth being irritated every time you notice it.

The soon to be grease soaked grout will take your mind off the black squares.

Which, for me, would be literally every time I looked at it. But, I am bothered by silly things like that. I might be more OCD than I previously thought.

obviously you have no clue about laying tile...

Obviously, you have no clue about laying tile. If you have to tape your tile in place, you are laying it wrong. My father laid tile for damn near 30 years and his father before him even longer. Not once have I ever seen a professional tile setting use tape.

She asked for his opinion and he said he prefers the asymmetrical layout so she went with that.

She made the wrong choice. That's one reason women should never be given options. You need to spell things out for them.

Suck it up or pay to have it re-done. It's not the contractors fault. Though he is an idiot.

Looks like shit might be a little extreme but it is awfully busy when combined with that counter-top ... I'd say re-do it but its tough blaming the contractor when the wife gave the go-ahead.

:colbert: Congratulations. You have single-handedly figured out this thread.

Good, if it's so simple why are you here asking opinions?

Blame it on your wife, get out your checkbook and pay the guy to redo the whole thing if you don't like it. Maybe next time you will put on your big boy pants, meet your contractor, and tell him exactly how you would like the work to be performed.

EDIT:
After looking at the pictures closer it's such a poor job of tile layout, on such a simple tract home "L" shaped kitchen, I would hope it's the guy's first job. If you paid more than $80 or $100 labor for that, you got thoroughly fucked.

Looks fine to me. You need to replace all those outlets with GFCI though, unless the circuit is protected someplace not shown.
