Any of my concealed carrying, IDPA or IPSC competing friends will gladly change your mind on that.

You've never been robbed at gunpoint, have you?

No, but if I am, what can I do? If someone's already got a gun out on me, would it be so smart to reach for my own, and end up dead one second later?

I actually tend to agree with you. I HAVE been robbed at knifepoint, in NYC. I was unarmed, and handed over my wallet. It really bothered me afterward.

In hindsight, I think that a concealed pistol might have helped, but it also might have ended up much worse, with one of us dead. Even if the robber were the only one hurt, I would have ended up under investigation, and possibly charged criminally, not to mention that I would have to live with the knowledge I had hurt or killed a man (even if he clearly deserved it, I can't believe this would not bother me in a major way). On balance, it was easier and cheaper to just hand over the wallet. I would readily use a gun to defend myself or a family member from rape, torture, or murder, but generally I would rather give up money or property than shoot someone.

I agree. I have attended the 8 hour concealed carry training in SC. They recommended throwing your wallet or other valuables in the opposite direction of the one you want to flee in. Even if you have a concealed handgun. You should only shoot someone if "a reasonable person" would strike a deadly blow in the same situation. So if your assailents start shouting: "You're gonna die, cracker motherf*cker!", they have the ability to make good on their promise, and you believe them, it would be reasonable to draw your concealed handgun and use it.

I took a handgun training class a few months back and was surprised that over half the class (20 people total) had Glocks. I have a G19 myself, I like it. Very easy to shoot and maintain.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the Springfield XD yet. This gun started out life as a Croatian (of all places....) design combining the best elements of Glock, HK and 1911 Guns. It comes with a Glock-style trigger safety and a 1911-style grip safety. It was originally called the HS2000, but then Springfield picked up the design and it is now called XD. It is available in 9mm and 40 S&W, in various barrel lengths. If you are only going to own 1 handgun I would recommend you check out their full size model in 9mm. I like the trigger pull better than the Glock (less stacking), and the added grip-safety gives you peace of mind for concealed carry. In addition, it comes with a loaded chamber indicator, firing pin status indicator and ambidextrous magazine release (something the southpaws among us will appreciate). You may be able to pick up a second-hand HS2000 for $300.

It's too bad you don't value your own life... Do you value the lives of your loved ones? If yes, why not have a measure of protection rather than just be a victim.
