but im not 18 yet and most of the gyms around here require you to be 18 to use their equipment. so i guess i have to buy my own equipment to use at home....

look at this machine here

that looks like i can do just about all the typical exercises a beginner will ever need. and its real cheap anyway. cheaper than a year at the gym, thats fur sure. so then why do people even bother going to the gym anymore?

of course, what do i know, anyone have any recomendations for me on what to buy? im brand new to this, and i need to buy one of these cool things.

on a side note: thanks to everybody at ATOT whos always willing to provide advice on things to buy when i dont know about it and need help. it really helps quite a lot, like last time with me asking about the ionic breeze air filter. i ended up buying 2 of them!! thats a lot of $$$ and thanks to atot, i was able to make that decision.

I don't know about that machine but are you sure you have to be 18? I had to have someone who was 18 pay and sign for me but I'm only 17...

Gym pros:

Looking at other people with better bodies may motivate you to try harder/continue coming.
Hot sluts in tight clothes.

Gym cons:

Looking at other people with better bodies may depress and discourage you.
Fat sluts in tight clothes trying to lose 400 pounds.

I've worked with those machines before, and honestly, I did not like them that much. Your best bet is a good dumbbell set (dunno how much $, sorry) which should be TOO expensive. That and a bench would be an excellent home gym. If you insist on getting a machine, then I (personally) would go with a bowflex, because that is by far the best machine I have worked with. That of course is aside from the machines at the gym (hammer strength and the like).

EDIT: those huge badass mofos started where you were, and worked their way up. If anything, they will help motivate you , and most are great guys with lots of knowledge.

Doesn't your high school have a weight center? I went to a public school and we had one ...

anyways, I joined a gym that was 18+ only, at the age of 16 with a parental consent form and stayed a member for many years. Go in and ask, and go in w/ a parent. It can make a difference.

Also consider the Y or local rec centers, they often welcome young ones.

that's a nice machine.. but looks like you're still gonna have to buy weights for it.. like xyion said, get a bench and some dumbells.. they do wonders.

Seeing someone stronger than me just makes me work out with even more effort.

If you actually talk to those huge mofos they will more than likely help you out!!! Guys like that treat personal fitness as an obsession, and are usually more than happy to give you hints, spot you, and anything else. Just stay away from the ones with the weird lisp and the pink tank top...:brokenheart:

my humble comments:

the leg and preacher curl attachments on that machine will just get in the way & be a pain to add/remove.
no bench at that price is going to be very sturdy.
you're not going to get a very good leg workout.
at a gym there's usually someone to pull the barbell off your neck when your bench press fails
and you're a few minutes from death.

i never think or say anything bad about a gym newbie who uses good form
'cause you gotta start from somewhere & (almost) nobody starts out lifting > 500 lbs.

OTOH, the lame-o's who do above parallel squats with 275 lbs are just
asking for it.

id check nearby colleges, they often offer really cheap memberships to use their facilities for non-students.
a friend of mine just paid $80 for a year to work out at a nearby university. and the facility is great. just a thought.
