May I recommend Roy Buchanan. Start off with the early stuff or the anthology and avoid anything related to the Atlantic sessions (after 1976).

Best guitar player ever.

Welcome to the club! Besides the music blues has a great mythology to it also. Leadbelly, convicted of murder, was pardoned by a Texas governor after hearing him sing. Its been well documented that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his musical prowess. And the list goes on and on. You'd do well to pick up a record by either of those two (hell, Johnson recorded fewer than 30 songs before being poisoned by a jealous husband). And be sure to check out Howlin' Wolf and some Muddy Waters while you're at it.

BB King - "Thrill is Gone", "Stormy Monday"
Willie Dixon - The Chess Box (his songs, performed by him and a bunch of other legends)
Buddy Guy

Chris Whitley - Dirt Floor (Living With the Law is excellent but more blues-rock)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - The Sky is Crying
Robert Cray - Strong Persuader
