I (sort of) medically retired in Dec. 2003 after running cranes and heavy equipment for 30+ years...Currently training as in architectural drafting, but by the time I finish the schooling, I'll be 55+ and eligible for my union pension and (most likely) social security disability. We'll see how that plays out...

Retiring at 50...
Just another reason why Unions are good for American workers...</end quote></div>
How is that good for American workers again? Puts more costs on the company and many are struggling to keep up. I'm not putting down unions or anything. I use to be in one, until I moved over to management two years ago.</end quote></div>

By getting thousands of manufacturing jobs moved overseas, of course.. :p

You're next :D

A place that kinda caught my eye was Mesquite, NV

They have their own well and don't pull water from Lake Mead

About an hour and fifteen minutes north east of Vegas.

My boss knowing this asks me 2 hours into the shift, "where have you been all morning, I haven't seen you."

I said, "Training."

He said, "Who were you training?"

I said, "I'm training you to get along without me."

BTW- I had been out in production, working.

Good for you. I wish you the best.

I retired 14 years ago and am lovin' it.

It's an irrigated wasteland. Plus it's 1:15 NE of Las Vegas... Why anyone would live there voluntarily is beyond me. People put a big premium on "nice weather" but how is a sunny day a beautiful day if you're in rocks, sand, and manicured grass and shrubs grown purely through irrigation? Give me a forest any day. Also keep in mind that the summer will be TOO HOT to go outside.

WoW retiring at 50. My father is over 50 and is a Mechanical Engineer. He is not eligible for retirement until after he turns 60 and he only gets a partial retirement at that unless he stays till 65.

Congrats! I've been retired @ 3yrs. since I was 53. My wife will probably work for another 10 years, and I do get the "Hairy Eyeball" at times. Like when partying takes precedence over the "things to do" list. :D
I thought I would want to work again, but soo far, it just ain't happening....yet.

Congrats!! I hope I'm able to have decent investments so I can retire at 50 too. I'd ideally like 40, but I need to move on to a better job to pull that off!

BTW, if you happen to run into your boss in the restroom, be sure to piss on his leg...it seems to work well for some careers here! ;)

Now some may claim to be able to invest their money smarter and get a higher rate of return, but not many actually would/could. You management folks aren't the only ones who make a company what it is, it's a team effort between management and workers, and those workers are entitled to reap some of the benefits of the collaboration.
Do you believe they should be entitled to medical insurance, since that also adds to the company's costs and takes away from the bottom line?
what about paid vacations, sick leave, paid holidays? None of those make the company money...

Well there are some folks (e.g. Google) that believe a happy employee is a productive employee, so they pour $$$ into making working life as painless as possible. I like the sound of 3 free/quality meals a day...

Yup, there's no scenery better than big-ass rocks... Unless they're big-ass red rocks.

I don't understand the appeal of the Southwest. I've been on vacations to Utah (both SLC and Moab area) and Southwest Cali (the Anza Borego desert, among others). It's pretty for like a week, until it becomes apparent that it's a hot, arrid wasteland. Give me a place with actual plants any day.

But to each their own. Enjoy your big-ass rocks!
