So I'm putting on this intake manifold...

and I have a problem. I have a gasket where the hole in the gasket is bigger than the intake runneres! (v8 318). There is ~1/16 - 1/8 of an inch on all sides of the holes. The coolant holes lign up fine. Is this a problem? Should I just drop 20 bucks on a new one or can I just go with this one? Thanks in advance.

Using OT for his questions since 2004.

New question. Do I need any type of sealer on the gasket when I install it?

Gasket in a toothpaste tube basically. I hate that crap.

Are you sure it's the right gasket?

That is the problem. Wrong one. It is a little big, but the runners are all in their own places, everything is seperated. There is just this like 1/16 -1/8 inch band of steel that the gasket doesn't cover. Engine has 2 port sizes, I guessed and failed. Also, when I install a gasket, should I use some sort of rubber sealer?

If it were me I'd get the right gasket instead of trying to improvise with the wrong one. A little more effort now could save you from having to tear the thing back apart in the future. What kind of motor is this for?

A little 318 v8 in an old Warlock looking truck (74 D100). Just putting on an edelbrock intake w/ holley 4 barrel 😛

Get the right gasket. This is a no brainer.

The key is a cheap solution. I can go get another gasket for 15-20 bucks, but it will be lower quality. I want to use this one, but could I with speical sealer or something? (maybe that stuff)

That makes no sense.

The one you have now is good quality but it's the wrong one. A gasket that doesn't fit is 100% useless.

That's like saying that you have 2 left shoes but you want to wear them since they're good shoes. I'd rather have a cheaper pair that fits.

The thing is that the gasket _WILL_ seal correctly. It will just have some dead space around the ports between the manifold and teh head.

Dartworth was probably talking about Permatex Gasket Maker, which is what is used from the factory these days.

I'd use the gasket you have, it should be fine. I just use the cheap sealer in a can. I thought Permatex made that too, but I don't see it. I like to use one type on one side, and a different type on the other. That way it comes off in one peice when it's removed.

You should not have any problems with the current gaskets so long as there is enough material to actually perform the seal, and so long as none of the gasket material actually "overhangs" the edges of the ports and obstructs airflow.

for an intake manifold right?

just get the correct gasket, no silicone or compound is needed.

(i spell it right? silicone)

the 318 gaskets are made to also work on the 340/360 4bbl intake.

the ports on a 273/318 2 bbl are smaller than the 4bll heads.

just use the gasket you have.

Use a little Permatex at the water jacket ports.

I like to use Gasgacinch,or Indian Head sealer on the intake gaskets.

Here are some pics of my 273,and 318
