Another option is to buy a PCI controller card for IDE. Back in the 'ole days, this was how you got IDE support for your motherboard anyway. Non-RAID IDE controller cards are only $10-$20. For a while, makers of 160GB to 250GB IDE hard drives were giving them away for free with every hard drive.
 
I am noticing this too and quite frankly it really upsets me. I have plenty of large IDE drives and in fact just bought a new Seagate 300GB PATA (IDE). I have not seen any mass movement towards SATA and see no advantages except neater wiring.
