So I'm noticing a trend

I've been noticing that more and more Conroe-capable mobos are coming with only one IDE plug. Is this a limitation of the chipset, or are the mobo mfgs trying to force out PATA? This is bad news for anybody who runs lots of IDE drives and wanted to carry them over to a new Conroe setup! Now I have to buy some ide->sata adapters.

The 965 chipset doesn't support IDE. Manufacturers are including an onboard IDE controller, though, but in most cases I see only 1 channel.

I've noticed some of the newer nForce chipset-based AM2 boards only have 1 IDE as well. Only thing I can see being a problem is I tend to test out random IDE drives every once in a while and in that case it would be a little more of a hassle to have to disconnect my DVD burner every time. But then, my mobo still has 2 IDE channels so no matter.

Storage controller cards may be a cheaper solution than adapters however personally I would just sell all the old drives and get new ones. It wouldn't cost much more if at all plus multiple smaller capacity drives could be consolidated into fewer larger and potentially better ones.

This makes a lot of sense. I can see using mostly SATA drives in my next machine. Internal as well as external. And SATA opticals are just starting to emerge.

Well, I just started using my first SATA drive... a 74gb Raptor. I currently use 15 ide (PATA) drives so it's not dead yet. Just slowly dying. 😛

Yes, PATA is being forced out.

I am frustrated that all my IDE HDDs now have to be put in enclosures or sold, but at the same time, i respect the need to get away from such an outdated standard.

SATA = nice small cables & a separate channel for each device, which is great for simultaneous HDD/optical drive usage 🙂

How many old hard drives you really need in there?

I have two IDE HDs, my boot and a small storage drive. My DVDRW is also PATA. My only SATA drive is a 320gb storage drive.

*sigh I made the switch to PCIE and got rid of all my AGP cards, I guess I'm gonna have to do the same with IDE. 🙁 Good thing is, I can use them in older comps.

Isn't there a PATA-to-SATA converter?

SATA is much better, if for only one reason, because the cables are much smaller, which is better for airflow inside the computer.

True, but SATA cables also pop out easier than PATA cables. It sucks when you are working in your case with the PC on and a SATA cable pops out. 🙂 I know you should shut the PC down, but sometimes it needs to be on for some reason and fiddling around in the case I have pulled a SATA cable more than once.

The bad thing about sata connectors is that they are alot more flimsy. I have to be carefull when I'm poking around the case.

That is what I do not like about sata. I always feel like I'm gonna break that little plastic tab off the hard drive when working inside the comp....

I have a P5B deluxe and noticed it only has one IDE port. My maxtor 120G is IDE, leaving me with no spot to connect my CD drive. Is my only option to get a SATA HD?

You can put two devices on one channel...

It's not your ONLY option. You can get a converter. Or a PCI EIDE controller card.

so would it make more sense to get the convertor so I can plug my HD into the SATA connector on the MB or go with a controller card so I can plug my CD rom into that?
I would rather plug my HD directly into the IDE on the MB. Seems like there may be performance loss by going through a convertor. Since I barely use the CD drive, I'd rather compromise the performance of that device than the HD.

Just to make sure, you have 2 drives that need IDE conections.

1 Hard drive
1 Optical drive

If so you can connect both at the same time on the same cable. If you've got another optical drive then i'd just bin it truth be told.

Ah, that's right. I forgot I could piggy back off the ribbon cable. It's been awhile since I built the last puter.
ONe other question: I bought this maxtor 120g drive about a year ago and on the box it says S/ATA. I don' t know the model #, but does this mean it can be plugged into the MB with a SATA cord? I'm pretty sure on the back of the HD, there is only a plugin for power and IDE. I was using the grey ribbon cable, but this HD came with a black one, which I think is for ultra drive??? Sorry, for the newb q's.

Probably just marketing crap on the box if you've only got the two ports on the back. The difference in cables is probably down to the retail drive shipping with a black one for aesthetics, not due to any wiring differences.

There are such things as stupid questions, but you're no where near them so far 🙂

I don't mean to 2nd guess your expertise, but I swear in one of my older puters, I had the cd plugged into one IDE port on the MB and the HD into another. So the cd drive can share the same IDE port as the HD w/o conflict?

You're right. They can share, but it is best to connect them to different channels (There's several reasons for it but the short version is that it can be a bit slower for using the HD and quite a bit slower to transfer from the CD drive to the Hard drive).

yup, but usually if they share then you get to play with jumper settings
